We have a bench backseat and I'm trying to figure out where to put the infant seat... When you had an infant seat and a toddler seat, did you have your kids sitting next to each other (door and middle) or on either side with an open middle? [Poll]
We did either side b/c (a) my backseat really isn't big enough to put them side by side and (b) it would have been pretty difficult, imho, to put the baby in the middle and logistically reach both of them if we needed to.
We did next to each other BUT DD is much older so it was so that she could "help" if necessary. Like if little brother was throwing a fit she could try to entertain him and feed him a bottle. Now if I had DS and an infant I would probably not put them together. I would be scared DS would poke the hypothetical baby in the eye or trying to feed hypothetical baby cheerios.
I voted next to each other but it depends on what car... when Ryan was born we had a 4Runner and my little mitsubishi lancer, in both Megan was in the middle seat and Ryan was behind the passenger side. We sold the 4Runner and got a Highlander which has captain chairs so now in that car the kids are on each side.
I drive a Prius, and there is no way to install the carseats side by side. The way they do the backseat buckles makes it impossible because the middle belt overlaps the side belts, presumably to give more room to adults back there. I like having them in the outboard position anyway, because it means I can reach both kids easily, and see them both in the mirror. I keep a little basket between the seats with little toys and such too, which also means that when they toss stuff between the seats it more or less gets contained. If the seats were side by side they'd constantly be throwing stuff on each other, lol.
The two deciding factors of seat placement will be: your type of car and what type of carseats you have. We have a Pilot and Britax and Chicco and couldn't fit them side by side so they are on either side.
Either side. If I need to, I can get in the backseat (squished in the middle) to take care of them while DH is driving. Also it is easier to get them both in their car seats when they are both placed next to a door.
We did either side. We worried that if she could reach him she would give him things we did not want him to have(like food, toys, or just pinching him).
We have ours on either side because we wouldn't be able to place them next to each other securely enough in our car and we were also concerned that the older one would give the baby things he wasn't supposed to have (food, toys, etc..).
*Our infant seat, being installed backward of course, couldn't fit anywhere but in the middle. I guess it could have gone behind the passenger side, but then only the smallest of people could sit in the front seat next to the driver.
*It was great! Sure, now the girls can't sit next to each other b/c they'd be bothering each other too much (believe me, we've tried and it is a DISASTER), but Elena was a tremendous help with Julia when Julia was an infant. She'd give her toys and attempt the pacifier or just play with her. Worked great. Their age difference is 2 years 3 months.

Ditto this - we have Atalie behind the driver seat and Kennedy behind the passenger seat. It is easier for me to hand things to Kennedy this way, and I like being able to get Atalie in and out from my side of the car.
I didn't want them side by side- A's sweet to his sister for the most part, but I certainly don't trust him to be that close to the baby unsupervised. A's behind the driver's seat and V's behind the passenger. I find that easier because I can pass things back to A as needed, and I can see the mirror I have by V better when she's not directly behind me.

we've done it both ways. taryn went through several phases where she'd hit on teagan as a baby and we had to move them apart. then when she quit that she'd give him things and they would go straight to the mouth so we separated them again. then they went a long time with teagan in the middle and taryn on the side with no issues. but now that we have the van and bucket seats, we are back to one on each side. it truly is much more peaceful for us that way. they each have their own space and can reach to pass things off, but they aren't on top of each other and invading the others space.

Both ways work great for us.

Congrats by the way!
