XP: Bit of a downer 1-year appointment today

I know this is to be expected as Miles gets older and there are more and bigger milestones for him to reach, but it was still hard today to hear he's developmentally at the level of an 8- to 10-month-old baby. And he's a year old.Our pedi is very pleased, his therapists say he's doing great and for the most part I stay very positive about everything. It's just hard to stare at the cold, hard facts on a development chart and hear how delayed he is.He's still not crawling, though he can get up on his hands and knees and moves his butt back and forth. Not standing...can't get up from laying to sitting, but he feeds himself really well and is doing good at learning to drink from a sippy. He's fallen behind on typical child growth charts, but is still at 50 percent for height among babies with Down syndrome and in the 90th percentile weight-wise with his big ol' gut. All in all, he's doing great. Just a bit of a hard morning for mom I guess. :(

  • I'm sorry, it is tough to hear ~ regardless of how 'delayed' our children are...I also felt similar when I hear Gabe is making 'progress' but still has the expressive speech of a one year old (he is 3)

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012

  • (((hugs))) It is always tough to hear things from a doctor's mouth or see it on paper, even though you are coming to expect these things anyway, you know? Lots of prayers and hope you have a better day.
  • We had one of those last week too.  My daughter is at a 6-8 month level (at a year old) and I hate going to the doctors and having to rehash all of our doctors appointments and therapies over again.  It basically sucks.  So I enjoy the time in between when I just don't have to talk about it and I can just enjoy my sweet, happy girl.  Sorry you had to deal with it - but it does sound like he's doing great to me!  Hugs :)
  • Misery loves company :) Jacob will be a month in 2 weeks and is at the same level as Miles - not crawling, not standing, etc. He eats like a champ though! Still coughs when drinking water though.... Anyway, they bring us such joy though, don't they????

  • I know how you feel. My DD just turned 14 months and still not crawling. At her 12 month appt. I left crying my eyes out. I try and stay positive, but sometimes I get so overwhelmed and it's hard. Know lots of people on here are thinking of you and try and keep your chin up.
  • I'm sorry. I can't imagine how tough that would be. BTW your kids are adorable. I love that picture. He's definitely got spirit!
  • Hugs! I know how you are feeling. Its always so hard to get the letters in the mail after all our appointments. Its just tough to see it in writing. You know its there, but seeing it in formal reports knocks the wind out of me.

Oh, I know that feeling. My 18 month old scoots, barely crawls, and is put at a 7 month level! I've shed a lot of tears over this. Her fine motor and language are on par but she's so physically behind. I just have to keep hope that PT will ework its magic.
