? for ladies w/ an IUD

How long did it take?  I have to go for my annual on Friday.  I'm going to ask her about an IUD (the mini-pill sucks @ass, IMO).  If she says it's a go, I was hoping that I could get it....lack of a better word...installed.

Re: ? for ladies w/ an IUD

  • to answer your question..it took like 20 mins from the moment the started till they were done.  However, I am giving mine till the end of July to get better or I am getting it taken out.  I have way worse cramps  than ever, much stronger periods, and I am way more pissy.

  • The appt took maybe 15-20 minutes? Actually putting it in, like 5 tops. You probably can get it put in, just tell the nurse you're interested so she can get the stuff out.

  • Mine was quick and painless. Its basically like your annual pap smear, w/ an IUD insertion added to it. So however long a regular pap smear takes, along w/ maybe a 2 minute IUD insertion. GL!

  • My appointment was sooooo long.  Nothing to do with the IUD though.  I couldn't pee for the pregnancy test, so after trying a million times we finally just decided to get a urine sample through a catheter (I really didn't want to have to go back to get inserted another day).

Anyway, IUD insertion took just a few minutes.  I was surprised at how quick it went.  And it didn't even hurt either :)

I got the Mirena a couple weeks ago and my OB practice had to order it, which took a week or two.  I had Mirena taken out and got Paraguard put in today.  They didn't have to order paraguard, seems like they have that in stock whereas they have to special order Mirena.  Insertion took about 2 minutes or less for both and neither hurt more than mild period cramps.
  • I asked at my annual appointment if I could go ahead and get it put in, and they said no.  I had to call and set up a specific appointment for it.

May I ask why you switched?  I got the Mirena about 4 weeks ago, it's going ok but I'm tired of the bleeding!

OP - insertion is only a couple minutes.

  • It doesn't take long at all! It took a little longer for me because apparently I have some scar tissue on my cervix and a tilted uterus.

I switched because I couldn't deal with the side effects.  I'd never done well on hormonal birth control, but my OB convinced me to try it because it's mostly localized hormone.  BUT... I had mood swings, decreased milk supply, nausea overnight and in the mornings, and crazy bloating.  I had paraguard before pregnancy and bled a lot and had long periods with painful cramps.  There's a good chance paraguard will be better this time b/c my uterus is now bigger since I was pregnant.  But, even if I still have the bad cramps, it's only once a month and I prefer that over the hormonal b.c. side effects.
