Babies: 3 - 6 Months

techniques to get baby to STTN

I'm curious what people's techniques are that have helped your LO sleep better at night? Besides CIO. We've tried that but i think she was too young, and it was awful. We may try it again when she is over 6 months, but i'd really like to find another way to help her sleep better, if possible. She used to sleep great, but for about the last two months she wakes 2-3 times a night and can be really hard to get back to sleep. i'm just curious if anything has really helped your LO sleep better that you'd like to share. :)

  • My DD just slept through the night last night!!  Needless to say we are thrilled!!  Up until last night she had really only been waking twice in the night for a bottle.  Anyways, what has helped us has been consistently putting her to bed at 8.  We swaddle and give her a bottle, then put her down.  Also, recently we have let her fuss when she wakes up in the middle of the night to see if she can put herself back to sleep.  Doctors say that if your LO is over 11 lbs, that they should be able to go through the night without eating.  Anyways, I don't know if that helps, but that's what we do.  Good luck!  I think the key is consistency!

  • I agree with the PP, be consistent and start a nighttime routine, if you haven't already.  We give her her last bottle around 7:30 or 8:00 and then we have some book reading time, or just cuddle time with me and DH and then at 8:30 we turn the lights off in the living room and rock her to sleep.  She knows it's time for bed and now, if she's not going down by 8:30 she is extremely cranky!!  And, she sleeps from about 8:30 to 6 every night..(with the exception of this week as she has been sick).  Good Luck
  • yes, we have a bedtime routine- we are very consistent with that. except for the occasional overnight at a friend or family members house, but even then, we do pretty much the exact same routine. it hasn't seemed to help... :(

What's your bedtime routine? Have you tried to change it? For example, I have a weird kid-I notice if I give him a bath at night he doesn't sleep as well so I give him a bath in the morning instead. What about johnson and johnson's nighttime lotion? White noise machine? Some rice cereal in his bottle before bed (never worked for me, but I guess you never know)?

  • Escape Proof Swaddle.  It changed my life.
  • My daughter refuses to sttn too even after give her a warm bath a full tummy and in bed by 9:30 she still wakes up 2-3 timesfor food and she now weighs around 16 pounds I gave up on the idea of sttn
  • I am in the same boat.  My LO wakes 1-2 times a night to eat and he is a whooping 17lbs.  I am trying different things right now too.  I think part of the problem is not napping well during the day.  I am about to ask DCP to make him nap at about 3 or 3:30 so he can get a good hour nap in before i pick him up.  Now he has a bed time of about 8, I am going to try moving it up to 7:30 tonight to see if it helps or hurts.  It is going to be hard because that means we only get about an hour and half with him before bed everynight...the joys of being a working parent I guess.
  • OMG!! My LO has been sleeping through the night since she was about 7 weeks old. She's a tummy sleeper that might help too. Have u tried a little rice ceral in her last bottle before you put her down that might help.she also likes to cuddle when she sleeps, but I don't let her sleep with me anymore (don't want to get her in that habit).
  • I personally think that a lot of babies need to be asleep by 7 pm. I also think "enforced naps" help. Even if DD has to fuss for 10 minutes before she knocks herself out, she gets a nap when ever she gives me cues. When it comes to the night, she is really good but that took a bit. Once I put DD down between 7-8, she has been a dream. She's starting to move closer to a 6:30-7 and still sleeping 12 horus at night. Sleep beget sleeps IMO.
