Solids

So LO is almost 7 months and we try and feed him some solids everyday, but somedays frankly I don't get around to it and he doesn't seem to mind. He's not that into them anyway. Also right now he has an ear infection and is on meds for that. Do you think it's okay that I'm not really pushing them that much? We've sort of skipped purees too (he wasn't that into them) and I'm just offering stuff in the mesh feeder or little pieces.

Re: Solids

  • You've got a few months until he has to switch to milk and lose the bottles.  I think as long as you've gotten the hang of solids by that point you're ok.  Warning, there will come a day when he sees you eating and insists on having some of everything you have!  It happens fast.

  • I didn't push Andrew very hard and especially now when he wasn't feeling well - but I did try to continue at least once a day even then.

There was a period of about 2 months where he wasn't feeling well, I think around 6-8 months, where he basically wouldn't eat purees at all and I was sort of giving up but still offering once a day (he usually didn't go along with it much).

  • Olivia has days where she eats very little, then days where she literally shovels it in.

As long as she's getting enough milk or formula, I haven't worried about feeding her a certain amount of solids each day.  We've been slowing down on the purees in her "dinner" for the past couple weeks.  We just give her bits of food and let her feed herself.  Starting tomorrow, I'm doing the same for her "lunch" to see how she does.

  • jake was never much into purees.  I admit, I would get all this literature from Gerber or whomever with the sample meals for different ages and get all freaked out that I wasn't doing enough!  That said, I didn't usually get up and feed him breakfast, I'm not that good.  He always had a meal at daycare (purees) and dinner with us.  Starting at 10 months we had him on a more regular table foods.  He also started getting table foods at daycare at that time too.  On the weekends we try to keep his weekly schedule as much as possible.  Self feeding is beautiful but messy thing!

lol at the stupid Gerber guides - we were always so off from those!  :-) Def a sales pitch! :)

I'll be so glad when Andrew can give himself bottles/cups/whatever!

DITTO!  I'm like wait, I'm supposed to be doing what?!  Sheesh.  Smartest thing I've done is to stop reading that stuff.

I love, love, love watching Olivia feed herself even if she does fling mangoes at me.  She started laughing while we were eating tonight and she had a hunk of cheese stuck on her bottom teeth.  I was dying.

  • haha they are so cute when they are eating - little fingers pinching, funny mouth movements etc :)

until they start flinging their arms and throwing food on the floor! fail!

  • Eh, if it doesn't bother him and he's getting enough milk/formula I wouldn't worry about it.  Take advantage of this time while you can.  Isabella seems to know when it's time for her solids and gets really cranky if I feed her late.  She's so impatient when it comes to food!
