Can you tell me more about the homeschool co-op? I am not up on the Georgia law and requirements for homeschooling and have never heard of this. You can email or just post here, if you don't mind. dreamnanny @ hotmail dot com

  • Sure.  The school/co-op we are looking into is Cornerstone Prep, located at Summit Baptist Church in Kennesaw. (www.cornerstoneprep.org)

Basically with this program, DD will go to school 3 days a week and homeschool 2 days per week.  The school days are divided into periods just like public high school with elective periods chosen by the student/parent based on the child's interest.  During the elementary years, DD will only go to school to learn the courses we don't feel comfortable teaching her through homeschool.  The whole idea behind a co-op is that it is a mix between a homeschool and a private school.

Regarding GA law and requirements for homeschooling, there really aren't any, which is one reason why homeschooling gets a bad reputation and turns out some less than adequately educated kids.  By law, GA only requires that your child receive an education, so if you choose to homeschool exclusively you must provide proof that you are educating your child through attendance records (that the parent creates and submits).  A guardian must be the teacher, and the guardian must have a high-school education or GED.  Standardized tests are also required every 3 years after the 3rd grade level.  But that's it, sad but true.

If you choose a co-op program, where your child is enrolled in a school, this doesn't apply to you.  The biggest concern with co-ops (or any other private school) is their accreditation.  Just make sure it meets all state and college requirements.

I hope I have answered your questions.  If you have any others, you can email me at jdb3358@hotmail.com.

  • Thank you so much for that info! I was homeschooled and have never heard of this. This option is making me consider the homeschool route all the more.

I will keep your email on hand, I'm sure I'll have more questions down the road. Thanks, again!
