We just got back from our 1 month checkup... DS is healthy and in the 95th percentil!! BIG boy!! lol
The pediatrician is concerned though- he has assymetrical gluteal folds, which may mean he would have to get leg braces for a month???
I'm waiting for the Children's hospital to call me to set up and ultrasound to see if LO has this ailment, or not.... but the appt won't be for at least another week or so.... it's driving me crazy!!
Have any of you had a similar situation/dx?? What was the outcome??
TIA!! I'm really worried...
Re: DDH/Assymetrical Gluteal Folds/Hip Dysplasia???
My DD had hip dysplasia. She was diagnosed at 1 month and started treatment at 2 months. She wore a Pavlick harness 12 hours/day (overnight) for 1 month. After that month of treatment, her hips were "fixed." We had a follow-up appt with our orthopedist at six months and everything still looked good. She'll go to the ortho again at 18 months for another follow-up.
I know it's hard to find out that something might potentially be "wrong" with your child but, in general, hip dysplasia is very treatable - especially when caught early. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.
OP - if you get in touch with the person on 12-24, please keep in mind that, although I don't know her story, her child must have been diagnosed recently (after 1 year of age). Because of this, more extreme measures probably had to be taken (i.e. casts). If your DS is only a month old and is found to have hip dysplasia, the treatment will most likely be very different than that of a child who is older.
Thank you so much!!
What was said at the ped appt when they first "noticed" it? DS had no clicking or clunking... just the assymetrical gluteal folds. I'm hoping it's nothing, of course... but now I have to wait for the Children's hospital to call ME and set up the ortho u/s appt... I am so impatient- I hope they can get us in ASAP- b/c I either want to rule this out or treat it asap....
You only needed 12 hours in the harness? I'm reading 23 hours everywhere else.... and for more than a month. Did your DD have a very mild case??
How did you adjust to the harness (clothing, diaper changes, sleeping, feeding, etc)??
TIA!! I'm hoping all this info is in vain and I won't need it... but I'm very curious in case I do need it.
Dr told me my DD had assymetrical folds at her 2 month appt. I was very anxious because I had hip dysplasia as a baby and had to wear braces 2x.
I had my brother, an orthopedic surgeon and another friend who is a family dr check her out and they both said they didn't feel/hear clunking. At 4 months our ped said she was fine. We will continue to monitor it obviously.
This doesn't answer your questions, but hope it helps ease your mind anyway
DD was breech and, at my hospital, it is routine procedure to do an u/s on all breech babies to check for hip dysplasia when they are 1 month old. At the hospital and at her 2 week appt., none of the pedis ever heard/felt the clicks that are common in hip dysplasia. However, they had us do the u/s anyway. A few days after the u/s, I got a call from our pedi saying that DD had mild dysplasia and he recommended us to a pediatric orthopedist. We weren't able to get into the ortho for another few weeks, which put DD at 2 months old by the time we had that appt. In the meantime, I Googled dysplasia and had prepared myself for DD to be in the harness for a minimum of 24 hours/day for a few months. I was happily surprised to find out that the initial treatment was only going to be 12 hours for one month!
Because DD only needed to wear the harness for 12 hours, we had her wear it overnight. I dressed her in a onesie, put on the harness, and then put a sleep sack on her. I BF, so it took a few times to figure out how to nurse her but, after about 2 days, it came pretty easily. Diaper changes were more difficult because, when I changed her at night, I didn't want to stimulate her by taking the harness of, so I had to teach myself how to work around the harness to change her diaper. It wasn't easy, but it worked out fine. As far as sleeping, I actually think the harness made her sleep better because it helped to keep her still.
After 2 weeks in the harness, we went back to the ortho to have the harness adjusted for growth. Then, after 2 more weeks (one month total), we had another u/s followed by an appt with the ortho. At that appt., the ortho looked at the u/s and said that DD's hip angles were back to "normal." Yay! Like I said in my previous post, we had a follow-up appt when DD was 6 months old where they did an x-ray in the ortho's office to see how things were developing. Everything was still on track at that point. We'll go back again when she is 18 months so that the ortho can make sure that everything still looks good after DD starts walking.
Like you said, hopefully you won't end up needing any of this info! If you have anymore questions, let me know. When DD was going through her treatment, I had a hard time finding anyone who had any experience/knowledge of dysplasia, so I'm happy to help in any way that I can.
