Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If you make your own baby food please come in.

How do you do it?

What do you do to bring it to day care? out etc?

I am ready to make my first batch tonight apple and pears and am planning on freezing it in ice cube trays.

But little nervous about transporting it to others houses, away for weekends, etc.

Please share ANY tips.

Make sure they are single-ingredient (not apples and pears together), if you're just starting.

Put the frozen cubes of food in a freezer-safe container, and bring it to DC in a cooler with cold packs in it. Cold packs are your friends.

ETA: I'm planning on making my own food (LO isn't on solids yet), and I've been doing MASSIVE amounts of research since I was pregnant.

Oh, and I'm planning on using my regular Cuisinart and a stovetop steamer.  Microwave for reheating, I think...

I put them in little freezer safe containers (beaba baby has them).. My grandma starts taking care of DD on Monday, so i will be taking her a container which has enough for one week

so far i haven't made much but the Beaba Babycook is very easy and quick to do.. Shes not fully on solids yet..

  • I plan on doing the same wtith DD2 as I did with 1.  I made the majority of her food and froze it in ice cube trays and then stored them in ziplocs.  I would send a bunch with DD to the sitters (SIL's) so she would have them there, but when we were out and about I just bought organic jars and took them with us, that way I could just keep a few in the diaper bag when I needed them.  It was easy and convenient.

Oh and I steamed most of them or cooked them on the stove top and used my food processor.

I steam the veggies in our rice cooker and cook the fruits that need to be cooked on the stove (things like avocado and bananas don't need to be cooked) and sweet potatoes I make by baking.  Then I use the food processor attachment for our blender to make the purees.  You want to save the water from cooking to add in, or add in BM or formula to get the right consistency.

Then, like pp, I freeze in ice cube trays, and then transfer to a ziploc.

Do you need to bring food to DC everyday or are you bringing it in batches?  I take the cubes out the night before and keep them in the fridge until I need them.  They're ready by meal time for us.  And DS doesn't mind if they are cold.  If you're bring them everyday then just put them in small containers the night before in your fridge and bring them to DC.  They should have a fridge to store them in until meal time.

If you bring them in batches I'm not sure how you would do that.  I've never been in that situation.

  • So far I've frozen squash, green beans, carrots, and apples.  I baked the squash in the oven in a dish of water.  Everything else I steamed.  Pureed in my blender, used cooking water to thin to desired consistency.  (Can't use water from the carrots though due to the nitrates).  I then froze then in ice cube trays.

  • I have only done sweet potatos so far because we have been doing this for 2 weeks and she really likes them. I just boil them until they are really soft and then put them in the food processor. Divide them up by 2 tbs per container and then im done

  • I bought an immersion blender and it works great. I steam the food, puree it and then freeze it. I am freezing it in 4oz Gladware containers. I measure 2oz in each one right now and freeze it. DD is only eating 1oz 2x/day so I defrost the one I am going to feed her tomorrow and it's ready to go.

I chose those gladware containers so I could easily tansport it to daycare. This week has been the first week I've let them feed her solids and it's gone great! The containers are super easy to use and daycare is loving it. Good luck- I have found making my own baby food far easier than I ever could have imagined.
