We switched to cloth when DS was 5 months. I`m considering going to cloth from the beginning with this one. Anyone else planning to be crunchy with me and cloth diapering?

I'm honeslty thinking about it, I just don't know enough about them. I mean, I've changed hundreds of disposable diapers in my life, but I don't understand what to do with the poop if I'm not throwing it out in the diaper, lol. And what about diarrhea?

Just get a diaper sprayer and spray the poop into the toilet before throwing the diaper into the pail. Plus the diaper sprayer is awesome for cleaning little potties when you start potty training.

yup. cd ds starting around a year. turns out he's allergic to sposies. since i have all my cd from him and they're os pockets it will be cheaper to cd again. i just ordered some nb cd last week to get us through until baby hits 10lbs.
I'm gonna have a hard enough time not gagging just trying to change a disposable so I'm thinking its not the best idea to get a cloth one where I would have to mess with it for a few minutes more than necessary.

You'd be surprised how easy they are.

The poop doesn't like stick to them and you have to rinse it before throwing it in the wash? Cause thats what would get me. And can they pee in them more than disposables?
those of you who are interested in more info, please visit the eco-friendly family board. the girls there are an absolute wealth of knowledge.
Agreed! Oh and PS, I`m a Phillies fan too! Except they've sucked it up the past two games....
bahahaha. i can't stay awake long enough to watch the most recent games. i caught maybe an inning last night before i was passed out on the couch waiting for DH to come home.

you do not have to rinse a diaper prior to washing if you BF, as BF poo is water soluble. if you prefer to rinse prior to washing, you can either dunk & swish in the toilet or get a diaper sprayer.
once baby starts eating solids, poos become more solid, and usually plop right off in to the toilet and are flushed away. as far as sick poos, again, dunk and swish or use a diaper sprayer.
I plan to! I have quite a few cousins who CD and I'm hoping they'll share all their tips and experience with me. DH rolls his eyes when I say we're going to CD but I promised to get some "easy" all-in-ones or pockets for him to use. I think our plan, though, is to use chemical-free disposables for the first week or two and then move on to CDs.
DD was in disposables until she was 3 years, 9 months and PTed. I feel like we've done enough damage to the environment.
Mom to J (10), L (4), and baby #3 arriving in July of 2015
But I am also thinking about using a diaper service, because (1) there is a good one near me and (2) DH will be staying home with the baby, and I think a diaper service will be easier for him to manage since he'll be in charge of laundry. Any thoughts on using a diaper service?
I can tell you that my Mom used a diaper service with all 4 of us- and she LOVED it. We don't have any near us or we would. She even said if we would get a little diaper rash she would just leave them a note and they would treat the diapers when they dropped them back off with a powder that killed the rash within a day.

Not speaking from experience, only from reading: You can also get flushable liners, right? for when the poo gets solid?
I plan on CD-ing. I am building my stash now, so that I don't have to spend much money once my LO arrives. I know it's best to wait and find my style, but I am going with diapers that have consistently good reviews, and am trying to take advantage of sales while they are out there.
I've been really considering it to save money. My only dilema is we rent a townhome and don't have our own washer and dryer (have to pay in the laundry room) and using a diaper cleaning service defeats the purpose of trying to save money.
I might go 1/2 and 1/2 at first. I really like the idea of saving money and being soft on the baby and not having all that extra trash/waste (environment). However, do they really hold well with urine? leaks?
I would really like to, but I am not sure that a daycare provider would deal w/ that?
I have spoken with two daycares, and both said that they would accept the all-in-ones. One daycare had concerns about pins (I think most people use Snappis these days) and the other said that they don't do cloth without a cover because it wasn't sanitary (I didn't know anyone even did that back in the day!) .
We're going to. It's better for the environment, and better for my baby; it's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. I'm leaning towards using a diaper service at this point, but we'll see.

absolutely.
but for us, they were more of a pain than a benefit.
Definitely planning on it. I'm not uber crunchy (although compared to a lot of my friends I am, and am gaining a reputation as some sort of granola hippy chick!) but a) cost benefits and b) baby benefits and c) environmental benefits have it down for me. Plus, because we're planning on having a second, buying them now for the first will be great because we'll be able to reuse for the next! I think it really makes tons of sense when you're planning on having more than one kid especially.
DH was super skeptical but after showing him the cost comparisons over the long run for only ONE child and then considering we'd like two, he wa won over pretty fast
We will not be using a service, BTW, because for our money we'd rather just do the laundry at home, and having a truck drive around doing deliveries will detract from the environmental friendliness of it, you know?

We CD'd from the time DS was 5 months until I started working full-time and he went to daycare at 15 months. We used flushable liners, the Imse Vimse ones, and had no problem with them. They were super easy to use and you can wash that brand if they are just wet and reuse them. I can't wait to be home again after school is out to go back to our CD's!
I think we're going to go with a diaper service. I don't think I could handle that much laundry with the "efficiency" washer/dryer we currently use in our tiny little house. With that said, DF mentioned to me that he had heard that using cloth diapers helps the potty training process because it's easier for the little one to feel soiled? Not sure about the credibility of the source, but something to think about. Not to mention I was not feeling great about all that disposable diaper waste.

Yes, we did the same as you. Started around 5 months. I still think we are going to use disposables for that newborn period when they poop every 5 seconds. Will probably start with cloth around 3 months or so.

I will tell you my experience on this... we signed up for a diaper service before DS was even born, thinking we were going to be gung-ho about cloth diapering. Turns out that I HATE prefold diapers. We didn't even get through 10 of them, and basically lost out on our month's pre-payment. Definitely try it out on your LO before you commit. We started using Bum Genius 3.0s exclusively, and never looked back. (I'm the kind of person that only wanted one type of cloth diaper).
We're definitely CDing this next one... did it with DS since birth and haven't looked back Watch out though... it's addicting when you start adding to your stash!

Just a note...since you launder them every other day, the loads are pretty small. A small washer is just fine,

Two things to think about with a diaper service: 1) They only do prefolds, which you may or may not like (I do, some don't) and 2) I think they bleach the diapers. I wouldn't want bleache diapers on my child.
Bathroomsprayers.comhas the best selectionof Diaper/Bidet Sprayers which areactually hand bidet sprayers meant to be used to clean yourself, not a diaperoriginally. Great way to save allot of money on toilet paper and help theenvironment. They even have somestainless steel models that come with a 5 yearwarranty = the best in the industry!
Re: Anyone thinking about cloth diapers?
Yes, I plan to.
We started when DS was about a year old so I have some bigger ones but need to buy little ones for this little one.
I'm honeslty thinking about it, I just don't know enough about them. I mean, I've changed hundreds of disposable diapers in my life, but I don't understand what to do with the poop if I'm not throwing it out in the diaper, lol. And what about diarrhea?

definitely. we started CDing DS when he was about 7 months old and will do so from the start with this one.
half the fun of CDing is building a stash.
