Multiples

Those who had toddler while pg with multiples...

When did you stop lifting your toddler?  I was told to lift DS as minimally as possible, and for the most part, I don't lift him at all.  There are rare situations when I have no choice, however, and I have to lift him out of the crib, or put him in the crib, etc.  After I do this, I feel completely guilty and paranoid that I did something to jeopordize the pg.

I think I'm just extra cautious at this point because I'm still not at the "viable" point and have already been having BH for more than a month.  Cervix was long and closed on u/s 2 weeks ago and closed upon internal exam earlier this week.  I was taken out of work for 2 weeks due to the contractions, but was able to go back with very minimal hours (12/week) and sitting only.  I just don't want to "overdo" something and cause something bad to happen to these babies.  I am still extra paranoid even though I had a very irritable uterus during DS's pg.

Please help to ease the mind of a paranoid pg woman!

  • I made an affirmative decision to really focus on not lifting him last week.  DH helps me with him alot and I've had a sitter come to the house when I'm home alone to help me with lifting him into the high chair, crib, etc.  I still do lift him just by necessity but I really try not to.

ETA:  I started having back spasms last week which scared the crap out of me as I thought it was PTL so that really precipitated my cutting back.

  • I still do, every night to get into the bath.  But I've carried her down the stairs.  I try to lower the frequency, but she's my girl and I feel like I want to give her the last bit of carrying I can when she wants it. :(
  • I was put on bedrest at 20 weeks and didn't lift him after that.  It was about a month after my c-section that I was comfortable lifting him again.
  • My peri told me that I couldn't lift anything over 25lbs after 20 weeks.  My 2 year old is 32lbs and 37"tall, so that eliminated all lifting.  However, in the few occasions that she has fallen or needed to be picked up for a necessary reason, I do.  I'm lucky that she is already in a toddler bed and is able to climb in and out of her car seat without me lifting her.  I have been on strict bedrest with a shortened cervix and none of this has made it shorter.  I think in moderation, its fine.
  • I try to lift DD as little as possible, but I'm still lifting her.  I haven't had any problems other than back pain.  My OB never gave me any restrictions.

  • My OB told me to try to pick him up less starting at about 16 weeks. I tried to only do it when I have to. ie in and out of crib, high chair, and carseat. I was told not to when I was put on Modified bedrest at 32 weeks due to PTL. I had to do these things though. i didn't have anyone to help me. I just did them as infrequently as possible. I don't think that it hurt too mcuh to do it as few times a day as I did.

Ditto this.  Luckily though, DS is 3 and I rarely have to lift him these days.  He is pretty independant at this age.

Dx with severe endometriosis. DS#1 conceived with Met and TI. TTC#2 for 2.5 yrs. Dx 2nd IF. 4 clomid cycles, 2 IUIs, Finally IVF#1 w/ICSI worked for us! twins born 35w3d. Unexpected total hysterectomy 6/11. Now on the HRT train.

  • I still pick DD up pretty regularly.  I try not to walk around with her, but picking her up hasn't had a negative effect yet.

  • I was never given lifting restrictions from my OB/peri --- I was told to use my brain, don't lift things that i didn't need to, etc.

I only liften Griffin if 100% necessary during the day- which was rarely... and lifted him into his crib and out for nap and night time - it was never an issue.

But- i never had issues- cervix was always good, no PTL signs, etc.

I had a really rough first pg with my singleton - and my twin pg went great without problems- so you just never know!  The twins were born at 38w - Griffin was born at 36!

  • Thanks for the replies ladies...I feel better since my OB never said absolutely not to lift him, but just to minimize it.  Thanks for easing my mind!
