Babies: 3 - 6 Months

karo syrup is not working!

Riley has been super fussy and she is having very black, very solid BM but only very little bit and not every day.  I have been putting Karo syrup in her bottles for 5 days now and they are not helping to loosen her up.  What do you use to help your baby go?

At her Dr appt last week I told her pedi that she has been really fussy and not going that much but she didn't seem worried unless there is blood in her BM.

Re: karo syrup is not working!

  • Our doctor told us to put prune juice in his bottles (mixed with BM or straight juice) when he was "irregular".  We only had to do a few times, though one was a really bad case of constipation.  And it always worked really well for us.  We were told not to use karo syrup, though I know many pedi's say it is fine.

  • Our pedi suggested prune juice when karo syrup didn't work.  He had us mix 1oz w/ 1oz water.  GL!

  • My pedi suggested 1/2 oz White Grape juice mixed with 1/2 oz of water. We just started using this yesterday.  I hope it helps.  The Karo hasnt helped at all. If not I am going to try the Prune juice even though my pedi doesnt want me to until DD is 6 months.  I cant take her crying and straining everytime she poops.

  • 2oz water & 1tsp sugar, it works for DS every time

But with DD we did 2oz prune juice not mixed with water.

  • Karo syrup wasn't working for us either, so now we put 1/2 tbsp. of mineral oil in his bottle twice a day.  It works like a charm.
  • Pear juice.  My middle son's GI Dr told me to give him Pear juice every day when he was a baby.  Worked like a charm.  (Gerber makes it.)

Try Pear Juice.  My middle son's GI Dr said to use that over Prune juice and it worked wonders for him.  I had asked about White Grape juice and he said not to use it...grapes can constipate you.  And don't do apple juice.  You use apple juice when they have diarrhea, it helps firm things up.  (BRAT diet for diarrhea - bananas, rice, applesauce/juice and toast.)
