So I'm one of those people who have never had to workout or watch what I eat for my entire life, and would never gain a pound. Nowwww is a different story. I have a good 15 lbs. that I just can't lose (read: it's not "falling off" without me doing anything differently).
So I've come to the conclusion that I unfortunately must start exercising and eating better in order to drop this weight. My problem is, I don't know where to start! I'm not big into running (I get shin splints), but otherwise am open to other things. I've read a bit on these boards about "circuit training", "90PX", the "30 Day Shred", what the heck does all this mean?
Please help!
Re: Help! Don't know anything about proper exercise
Start with walking!
P90X is a program with a variety of workouts on dvd's...my SIL loves this, and I plan on doing it after baby is born.
30 day shred is from the biggest loser, they use circuit training in this, which is one stregth move, one cardio move, and so on....I have the biggest loser "last chance workout" dvd....5 min warm up, 25 minute workout, and it kicks my butt (and I work out all the time)...need weights for this one, I recommend 10lbs.
Crossfit workouts- very effective without spending hours working out...there are a BUNCH of workouts, and some require NO weight or equipment as you only use your body weight, I recommend the "cindy" workout...google crossfit if this interests you!!
Hope this helps!! Between my friends and I we have tried lots, so if you need any help or have questions, I'd be glad to help!!
Good luck!!
Do you have access to a gym, or any weights at home?
The PP gave you a good rundown of P90x and the 30 Day Shred-- you can do those at home. If you have a gym, or have enough equipment at home, though, I would suggest that you purchase The New Rules of Lifting for Women. It will teach you how to lift weights safely, how to eat for your goals, and how to incorporate cardio into your routing.
RE: running / cardio. I wouldn't suggest that long, steady state cardio will help you reach your goals. Your much better off (especially since you don't have hours to devote to exercise each day, I assume) lifting weights and doing some high intensity interval training. You can get a great workout in 25 minutes and burn more calories than you would in an hour-long walk.
Finally, I generally advise against CrossFit. I think their methodology is sketchy, especially for people who follow it blindly without knowing WHY they are doing a certain workout, or how workouts might help you reach your goal, or how to plan a week's (year's / month's) worth of workouts. You can go to an affiliate gym if there is one near you, but I find them to be prohibitively expensive for what you get. The CrossFit certifications are also lame-- I know LOTS of people who have gotten hurt going to XFIt because their instructors are poorly trained.
Good luck!
PM me if you want to know more about the New Rules.
For someone that has never exercised i wouldn't recommend p90x...its super intense.
I WOULD recommend wii fit!!! I have been using Jillian Michaels Ultimatum 2010 Wii game to workout...its tough and makes you work out on a schedule...
although..i must say the game is very poorly made....the resolution it makes you set and the intensity of the workout is good...but everything else about the game sucks. The Wii Fit Plus is top notch and only $20!!
yeah, definitely wouldn't recommend p90x, it's really hard. I was a college athlete (soccer) and thought it would be easy to do after having a baby and it wasn't not. Especially since the do a lot of core training and it takes awhile for our cores to get back to normal.
Here is what i would recommend for you: 20 minutes of brisk walking (treadmill or outside) with 1 minute of jogging for a week. After your 1 minute, you can do another 20 minutes of walking. Then a LOT of stretching. If you've never worked out, you will definitely feel it from just walking. Don't focus on ab exercises yet because you want to let your stomach recover. I didn't start doing ab stuff until 5 weeks PP, but remember, I was a avid exercise junky. Pick up a yoga or pilates DVD, but make sure you do the form correctly or you could hurt yourself.
Good luck!!
