Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Acid Reflux + Rice

I know I still have a month before feeding DD cereal out of a bowl + spoon... but since I already give DD 1tsp of rice per oz in each bottle due to reflux.. how does this work?? Will adding the cereal to her diet help her reflux and then i wont have to add it to each bottle anymore or we will continue to do both until she is on baby food??

Just curious.. I was reading some posts below and it got me thinking...

Re: Acid Reflux + Rice

  • the rice actually doesn't help with reflux...it just keeps the food in the stomach longer by weighing it down.  so you would continue keeping it in the bottle as well as feeding it from a bowl.

  • We also add rice to DS bottles because of reflux. At his 4 month appt the dr said we could start rice in 2-3 weeks, and just feed rice mixed with bm (or formula) from a spoon for a week before starting baby foods. DH asked me why we needed to wait since DS was already getting it in his bottles, so we waited a week and started. Surprisingly, DS didn't like the rice. I'm not sure if he didn't like the texture of it prepared like that or the taste. We kept trying for a week and sometimes he would eat a bit but rarely.

He is getting better with foods. I think he isn't a fan of different textures so far, more so than flavors. I tried the rice myself though and it was gross! I told DH to remind me never to give it to LO again (besides in his bottles). I am waiting until 6 months to try oatmeal, as I hear many babies like this much better.

ETA: Sorry, I forgot what your question was and rambled on about solids! Like pp said, it won't help with the reflux and you need to keep adding it to LO's bottles.

  • I was told the rice cereal in the bottle was to help make it thicker so it would absorb the acid in the stomach.  So, keep giving the cereal in the bottle also.  When we started solids with my son we had to continue giving cereal in with the fruit/vegetable.  Usually he gets 4 tsp. of oatmeal cereal mixed with 1/2 a stage 2 fruit/vegetable and then when that is finish we finish out the jar without cereal.  We have not given him the cereal with it and he spits quite a bit of it up.  I have been told that they either get worse when they start solids or better.  I hope it is better for you as it is worse for us.
