Trouble TTC

Losing weight help

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the scale to budge.  :-(

I track all of my calories on dailyplate.com and get between 1550 - 1750/day (90% nutritious foods).  I run with my dogs 5+ days a week and do weights 2 days or more a week on top of all the regular stuff I do.  I don't know what to do.  My MC last cycle gave me a kick in the asss to try and get into better shape for the fast approaching summer, and even though I'm trying really hard, but just not seeing any results.  Any suggestions?

Re: Losing weight help

  • Hi Glow!  Are you drinking lots of water and spacing your meals out so you have about 5 smaller meals?  Do you think you're burning less calories than you are taking in?

I'm sorry you're not seeing the results you want to see.  Could you be losing fat and gaining muscle?  If so, that could be the reason the scale isn't budging.  Are your clothes fitting diffrently?

    Best of luck!

What exactly are you eating? I have the most luck when I eliminate dairy and sugar (90% of the time) But your body could have different trigger foods, or foods it sticks to, KWIM?

Your body may be stuck in a rut. You could try a new type of workout, change up your diet, etc.

  • I would make sure that you're getting enough calories for your exercise.  I use sparkpeople.com and they calculate calories in and calories out to make sure you stay in your range.  Not sure if your program will factor in the exercise as well, but I'd do that and check.

If your calories are definitely correct, then I'd try mixing up the specific foods.  Like adding more fiber, lower simple carbs, more protein, maybe more smaller meals.

And you can also measure yourself.  Maybe you're gaining good muscle weight but losing inches and just not realizing it?

    Good luck!

  • I don't know you, but i have to stay under 1200 to drop weight. If I eat as much as you do I will stay the same. Plus I work out 4-5 a week. I have been killing myself, but my energy has come back and I feel so much better...
  • Like, here's a typical daily menu for me:

    7:00 AM: Bowl of cereal

    8:30 AM: Yogurt

    10:30: Hummus and carrots

12:00 Lunch - Lean Cuisine or leftovers, fruit, water

    2:30 PM - Apple

7:00 PM - Dinner, some kind of Cooking Light homemade meal.  Chicken, casserole, pasta, etc (almost always 500 calories or less), lots of water.

I leave myself a few empty calorie treats throughout the day like Hersey Kisses or whatever.

Daily plate says for my weight, trying to lose 1.5 lbs a week, I should be consumming 1715 calories a day and they do factor in exercise.

I don't think that's bad, step off of the scale and mesure instead. If you drop inches and not weight it's because you have more muscle and that weighs more than fat. I think you look great either way....

  • Awwww...thanks, Mari!

It's more of a "I can't change the baby situation so I'm going to change something else" kind of thing.  I thrive on change.

Me too lol! I thrive on deadlines, so I have until May 31st to knock off the rest of the weight. Then I start a new plan to drop 10 more by August! I'm excited...

  • My body is funky (have I mentioned that I hate PCOS? yeah, I think so!) ... but I've been following a modified WW plan. They give me 28 points, but in order to lose, I keep it under 25 points which ends up around 1200/1300 calories/day. I don't eat any white flour/sugar either. AND, I'm at the gym a minimum of 5 hours of cardio and 2 hours of weight training per week.

    Some weeks I don't lose anything, others I lose 3-4lbs. I've averaged 1.5 lbs/week, for a total of 15lbs since February 1.

Try to vary your exercises and your foods. And eliminate the candies, if you can! I let myself have a skinny cow ice cream sandwich every day to curb the sweet tooth ... which is the only "bad" thing I allow myself.

    Good luck!!!

This looks really good. Lots of healthy food and a good balance of protein and carbs. One small suggestion...maybe you should eat a snack in the late afternoon...nuts or crackers with peanut butter. This will keep your metabolism going and will help you eat a little bit less at dinner.

  • Glow, what I see is lots of calories from sugar and starch. And given that you're putting/having extra hormones on your body the metabolism might be different than what the program calculates (slower)

You are more than likely right.  I just LOVE pasta.  It makes me happy.  I'm not really a huge meat eater (that sounds wrong).  I love chickpeas, but DH hates them.  We have tofu maybe once a week or every other week.

Is Cheese considered a carb or protein, I always confuse that one.  Regardless, I'm trying to cut down on cheese too.

Those are what you should try to drop, and change up the exercise routine.

Sugar is real hard to drop, everything has sugar in it and you might go through withdrawl from it. I did and was crazy cranky...

You might consider eliminating processed foods. The glaring thing I see is the Lean Cuisine. When I cut those out of my diet 5 years ago, I dropped weight and felt so much better. You can have leftovers, salads, etc instead.

When you do eat pasta, try switching to WW pasta

Also, my MIL recently lost a lot of weight when she went on WW.

Another suggestion is to maybe train for a half marathon or something? To push yourself in the exercise side of things?

While you're staying around 1700 calories per day, you're consuming a lot of carbs, obth simple and complex.  My trainer told me that I really need to start the day off with protein not carbs.  By consuming that many carbs during the day, your cells are metabolizing the glucose in the foods you ate that day and you're not getting into the stored fat.

FIW, it seems to be working for me right now.

I only eat LC or HC like 2 a week, and they're actually not so bad anymore.  The ones I get don't have chemicals or perservatives in them.  Regardless, you're probably right.

Is WW pasta any good?  I've tried substituting whole wheat pasta, and it's just not the same.

::taps chin thoughtfully about doing a half::

Should I give up my fruits for veggies?

yeah, once or twice a week isn't terrible. i will admit i'm a bit extreme/hippy-ish with my eating, so that might influence my responses. the sodium is what kills me.

I don't mind WW pasta. I actually just tried brown rice pasta and did not like it. ugh (trying recently to reduce glueten - so hard)  I get mine at TJs, its much heartier.

Regarding fruits vs. veggies, I mean, fruit has more sugar, but man, I live for fruit!

Do the half! Or some other physical challenge. I find that giving myself new physical challenges is a great way to feel better about my non-pg body. lately for me its new yoga poses, but I'm going to join a trail running group this summer.

  • try hot yoga or pilates...sometimes when you workout or lift regularly you're building muscles which weighs more than fat typically.  Therefore...the numbers on the scale won't budge.  sometimes elongating muscles and stretching can help.  It also helps eliminate toxins from the body.  Also, might try to take up a new exercise class or something new...like spin...often our bodies get "used to" one exercise and won't continue to lose weight until we vary it.  GL

  • So, Ladipale, you seem up on this stuff...can you answer a question for me?

Is 100% duram/semolina wheat pasta considered white?

Is Jasmine rice or organic long grain rice considered white?

I'm probably dumb for not being able to figure this out.  I mean, I realize the rice is white, but is it the bad kind?

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I'm doing WW and I was losing about 1 pound per week. Then the RE said I should cut bad carbs altogether. So no white flour, sweets, potatoes. And he said no more wine ( I had a serving every night with dinner)Crying. What do you know, I lost 3 pounds in a week. This is a bit excessive though, so I am hoping I will be at around 2 pounds per week loss maximum. I still have one bite of dessert if I really want it, but I eat mostly lean protein and veggies, along with good carbs. For bread I buy the Ezekiel brand which is low glycemic. And I found these crackers that are entirely made of cheese so I was able to successfully replace potato chips (which are my weakness). To sum it up, I basically just looked at the South Beach diet phase 2 and went with that :)

You are so much better about exercise than I am. I think it may be just a temporary plateau. Maybe some interval training would be also helpful (unless you are doing that already).

If its white, then, yes, its considered 'white' and a less complex carb. All pasta is wheat. You want whole grain/whole wheat pasta. It should be brown

And Jasmine rice is white, even if its organic. We switched to brown Jasmine rice and LOVE It. It does take longer to cook, which is annoying, but its good.

also, about your yogurt.. be careful! lots of yogurts have LOTS of sugar and/or HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). When I was still eating dairy, i switched to nonfat greek yogurt and added frozen fruit and a little agave syrup.

    You're so helpful!  Thanks!

I'm pretty OCD about avoiding HFCS and junk like that. If I can't pronounce an ingredient, it doesn't go near my mouth. I really try to avoid Aspertame and things like that too.  A lot of the big brand (Yoplait, Dannon) have been coming out with their own versions of Greek Yogurt, which I'm excited about.  So far though, I'm having a tough time finding plain in the big brands.  I vary between yogurt and cottage cheese in the mornings, depending on what's on sale that week at the store.

Check the sodium. You'll piss yourself.

And honestly, with the food being cooked, frozen, then reheated in the microwave, there are a lot of nutrients you are losing in that process.

Is that really true though?  I had the understanding that when vegetables are cooked in water, it leaches into the water and then when you discard the excess water, that's where the real nutrient loss is.  Microwaving (and not overcooking) in nominal amounts of water with out discarding keeps the nutrients still present.  That was my understanding though.

The LC meals have abuot 25% of recommended amount. If I keep my sodium content under control the rest of the day, I don't think it's so bad.  Bagels are way worse in terms of sodium.

  • I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if this has already been covered.  I'm doing weight watchers now.  I'm really trying to avoid white flour and reduce sugar to more natural sugars.  Like someone else said, I do love my skinny cow (I've had it the last couple of nights hehe).  I'm trying to alternate that with fresh berries and low fat cool whip (I haven't switched to the sugar free yet, I will in time).  I also am having all whole wheat carbs .... so I eat Fiber One Raisin Bran, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, whole wheat tortillas, etc.

I do let myself have some indulgences.  Generally I have either oatmeal or the fiber one cereal for breakfast.  This morning I had chocolate cheerios (no milk) because I was in a hurry and they were handy.  I don't do that very often (in fact this is the first time I've done it) and a banana.  I haven't had a morning snack (ate the banana late) but had planned on a low fat string cheese.  I'm having salad for lunch with grapes.  I have a honey tangerine for afternoon snack with carrots.  Dinner is leftover salsa chicken (chicken baked with taco seasoning and then a jar of salsa poured over it), shredded and put into whole wheat tortilla with fat free sour cream, salsa and black beans.  I'll have some berries for dessert.  It's a little more fruit than normal as I like to put more veggies in, but it works.  We will probably have a salad with oil and vinegar with dinner.

Anyway, my point being, I try not to have refined sugar and white flour.  We'll see how it goes!
