To further amplify F's OCD

She now requests to have her hands wiped clean several times over the course of eating one meal.  She cannot stand to have dirty fingers.  Anyone go through this?  Any advice?  My free wipes stash is dwindling rapidly ;-)

  • Maybe offer her a finger bowl or a warm, damp towel to wipe her fingers on during meals?  Big Smile

  • Natalie does this too. It's actually to the point that we are starting occupational therapy next week (along with her therapy for eating/texture issues).

She really does sort of panic about it. Yesterday she was walking around the house in socks and stepped on a drop of water on the floor and totally freaked out. She seriously wouldn't walk, she just stood on her tippy-toes and finally just sat on the floor and cried until I took her socks off.

The OT suggested doing messy play with food to help her learn to be OK with having food on her hands. For example, make Jello and put small plastic toys in it for her to fish out. Also, bury small toys in whipped cream and have her dig for them. We haven't tried it at home but we'll see if it works when we start next week.

  • Landon does this as well. I just leave a wet washcloth on his high chair so he can wipe whenever he wants. Good luck!

  • Avery gets her own dish towel out before meals.   Not to say she doesn't get messy, but she likes to wipe/wash her hands rather frequently.

  • I pretty much limit her to only one wipe during a meal.  And she has to do it herself. If she wants to keep on wiping, she uses the same wipe. And then after the meal, we go and wash our hands at the sink.

This is a great idea!  Thanks so much~

We tried this with Aidan, only he gets his own wet washcloth - the little bugger started getting too smart for us because he will claim to be all done then after we wash his hands he begs for his plate back. Grr

  • Rena can't stand to have her hands or fingers dirty either. I also go through several wipes...I'm going to have to try the one wipe thing too! I'm beginning to worry a little about some of Rena's OCD tendencies!

  • When E was tiny I used a wet washcloth, but for a long time we've just been giving her a cloth napkin like the rest of us use.
