Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can you give "solid foods" even with no teeth?

My husband thinks our son can have actual SOLID foods (like pieces of banana, avocado, maybe even pieces of pasta) or whatever we eat that is mushy enough for him to chew with his gums. Is this true? He has no teeth but has been eating purees since 4 months. We haven't tried puffs or those yogurt bites yet because I'm too scared he'll choke since he has no teeth!

  • Oh yeah!!  We started actual "solid foods" at 6 months with DS.  Those gums can do some damage.  He had only 2 bottom, front teeth when we started.  He still only has 4 teeth now..and can eat pretty much anything soft.

  • Ugh, yes. They use their gums to mash food. I'd probably try puffs or something to get him used to "solid" food.
  • Yup. Like Jillian says, at this age, they use their gums to mash food.

  • DD has no teeth at all and has been on entirely adult food for a month.  She does fine.  Most babies just have their front teeth and you don't use those to grind up your food.  We make sure things are not hard and pull them apart into small pieces and she does fine.
  • Yes, Cedric ate solids without any teeth.  No problems at all.  He 'chews' them with his gums.
