Waiting in the exam room...rant

Does anyone else have this experience?

I go into my doctor's office, they call me from the waiting room after usually only around 2-3 minutes, then I wait in the exam room for at least 1/2 hour (on the really uncomfortable exam table).  When the doctor finally comes in, she talks to me for no more than 3 minutes, max.  She goes through all the usual things, weight, heartbeat, measurements, and then basically darts out of the room.  I feel like I'm really inconveniencing her anytime I have a question to ask.  At my office I see I different doctor each time and I've had the same experience with all of them!  I'm usually a really patient person, but this is starting to drive me crazy!

  • DH and I always joke that if my appt is at 3:45, that really means 5:00.  I, too, have been in the waiting room for a 'short' time, but then had to wait in the exam room for at least a half hour.  The only difference is my OB always waits until he's sure I"m done with any questions I have.  Gotta give him credit for that.

  • my practice isnt quite that bad, but yes, I know the feeling and I always bring a book to read as I know I am going to have to wait!
  • I have waited a while in the exam room like you, but my doc always answers any questions that I have and makes me feel like no question is too trivial.  I'm just glad that my appointments are quick and easy, it means that everything is going well.
  • Wow,  you just described my Dr. appts to the T!

It is very frustrating, but I always remind myself, I am paying these people thousands of dollars, and Darn it, they WILL hear my questions and concerns!

I am hoping in the next 6 wks. the appts will not be as fast, since I am rounding the corner into delivery land... we will see.

  • its not like that for my appiontments but for my 2 year old daughter.. it drives me nuts. shes one of the clinics first appoinments if not the very first. it takes them maybe 5 mins to call her name.. then it takes at least 45 mins waiting for her doctor! drives me crazy.
  • My doctor lets me asks questions but his answer to everything is dont worry everythings fine. Which I am glad to hear, but I dont get much explanation to help me believe him
  • I have that experince too sometimes, and it is really frustrating.  I am a nurse, and I know that it is only a 10 min appt time I am booked for...if they are already running late I am sure they see the OB checks as catch-up time.  I had to switch offices from my last pregnancy, but I def feel like they were much more patient, and not rushed at my last office.
  • I like my doctor, but sometimes the waiting can be a bit extreme.  After having so many appointments, I know if I get a time after 10 AM that there will be a longer wait.  I try to go first thing in the morning before they get backlogged.

Do they have a chair in the exam room?  Mine has a comfy chair and desk for talking to you after the exam (its in a nook area in each room).  If they are really late, I get off the table and read my book at the desk.  The table is way to uncomfy to sit up there for too long.

  • Mine does the same and the worst is when I started getting checked and I have to sit there with a sheet around me for 30 minutes! UGH
  • My old OB was like that, except I had to wait an hour in the waiting room, and then another half hour in the exam room. Part of the reason why i switched Huh?

  • DH & I hardly ever have to wait in the exam room or waiting room for our OB.  She's there within a couple minutes of checking in and never makes us feel rushed.

Twice the OB's nurse wanted to talk to us most recently about birthing classes, breastfeeding etc... and the first time we went in she reviewed miscellaneous things the hospital does.  And we had to wait for her in the exam room for like 20 minutes after the our regular appointment.

We figured since our doctor is timely and her nurse is only working in the clinic that it's not a big deal.

I would be really frustrated if I were in your situation.  Good Luck!

  • I complained about it and it got a lot better. For a while I was waiting at least 30 min in the waiting room and then another 30min for the OB. One day, they apologized for the wait and I just responded "eh I'm used to it by now." After that it has been much better. I even told them I was pleasantly surprised to be called in right away. I still have to wait 10-15min for the OB to come in and it wasn't too bad when I could just sit in the chair and read a magazine, but now I have to disrobe from the pants down and wait on the exam table for him to come which can feel like an eternity. I would say something and see if it improves.

  • When I lived in California this is how it was. Since I've moved to a small town in washington, if my appointment is at 3:45pm, I'm out by 4:00pm. They are great.

  • I'm so lucky.  My doc comes right in.  If I wait for even 5 minutes he comes in and says he's sorry.  Yesterday at my appointment he was delivering a baby so I did have to wait but after the nurse checked my weight ect. she had me go wait in the lobby again where the tv is.  Even with that my appointment was only delayed about 25 minutes.

Now my daughters pediatrician sounds like your OB.  THAT is even worse cause I have to try to entertain her in the small little room for 30 minutes or more.

  • This happened to me once at my OB's when he hired a nurse practitioner. I didn't get to ask any questions before she hussled me out the door. I spoke with the secretary immediatly after and demanded that I be able to ask my basic questions, and that I didn't appreciate being rushed out. They brought me back in, the nurse took the time to answer my questions and it has never happened again.

  • I don't typically wait too long... maybe 15 minutes or so once i'm in the exam room.  i have two docs, and depending on what they have going on that day they might be with me anywhere from 5-15 minutes.  if i have questions, they take the time to address them, even if they are busy.
