anyone face bedtime issues again at 18mos?

I know everything comes in phases and as soon as I get used to one, its on to the NEXT!

But our newest phase is a complete LOATHING of bedtime. She completely protests bedtime now and its no fun for any of us. Most days she used to go down easy-peasy.

We do the same routine we have always done - dinner, milk, bathtime, rocking in chair or a book & then bedtime with blankie & pooh bear. But now she screams bloody murder as soon as I put her in her crib. Last nite when I was rocking her she kept trying to get down & to the door, telling me "I bye-bye" and crying. So I put her in the crib & she started the screaming.

It must go along with toddler-dom and her new found assertiveness - right?!

  • There's another sleep regression at 18-months and it sounds like you're there. This one is supposed to be related to language development, so don't be suprised if she starts talking up a storm soon.

  • Around 18 months is sometimes the time of separation anxiety...maybe this is her time for it (at bedtime.) ?

    Mama to Z - 5.5 years, G - 3.5 years, & M - 1.5 years.
  • We're not at your age/stage... but we just has to switch up the routine in our house.  When I read/bottle/rock Andrew to sleep - he throws a FIT!!  When DH walks him around the house and says good night to everything (paintings, the cats, the TV, etc.) - he goes to sleep without a fuss.  (Sorta like a Good Night Moon thing. M&M does it - so we tried it too).  Anyway... maybe you need to switch things up.

ugh - im so in the dark about toddler development!!! I need to read up. The baby stuff I was on top of - this is a foreign world to me though.

She already has been picking up more & more words everyday! So exciting to think of the nighttime woes as huge leaps & bounds in terms of her little mind growing. makes it more bearable for sure.

oooh Good idea, Al!!! Plus this would be wayyyy better once baby is here too. :P

  • We never had much of a problem putting J to bed at that age but around that time is when he started waking up at Butt Early O'clock.  :(   So I guess it's one or the other.  It was temporary, though, thank goodness!!!  No helpful suggestions, I'm afraid, but I hope she goes back to the normal routine SOON!!

lmao!!! we battled that a few months ago!!! TG shes back to 630am :P muuuuch better than 5am

  • oh yes! I remember being SO MAD that it wasn't as easy as it used to be! I hope that this phase is short lived in your household!
  • Yup, DS had the 18 month sleep regression too and his was all about bed time avoidance -- he'd do anything to stall.  Even feigning hunger. It drove me batty.
  • We've been having sleep issues in general - fighting bed, waking up at 12:30, waking from 3-5 then up at 6.  Waking up at 6:00 when she used to sleep until 7:30/8.   It's going on a couple weeks now but last night was almost back to normal - knock on friggin wood!  Good luck - I feel your pain.

I don't think you are into TV but it really helped us to do a 10-15 minutes of Sesame Street before bed.

oh nooo! :( Hope Chars pahse is short lived too!

and we totally 'do' tv in our house :-/

  • Is it bad that I can remember having problems at 18 months with sleep but I can't remember what they were?  Especially since it was only 3 months ago?  lol, guess it passed!
