Many women have been telling me lately that since this is my first baby, he/she will probably be born AFTER my EDD. They say that first-borns are usually late.
I know that there's a small percentage (5% or so) of babies actually born on their due dates, but I can't really find any info on the statistics of those born before or after. I just find general statements saying most babies are born within 2 weeks after the due date.
Any ideas? Was your first baby born before or after your EDD?
Re: first baby and EDD
She just wanted to be born on April Fool's Day, lol. She's so cute!

My water broke on my due date and Nico was born that same night.
But I have heard that most first pregnancies are born after EDD. Also remember that unless you are temping or something like that, you don't know excatly what day you ovulated and concieved therefore EDD can be off by a couple days in either direction.
They wanted to induce me from 37 weeks but my body wasn't ready. At last arrived the big day and nothing. He was four days after EDD. Of course, I went into labor the night before they had planned on inducing me.
There are lots of old wives tales out there...don't listen! LOL Lots of acid = hairy etc.
Plenty of my friends have had their 1st babies earlyor on their due dates, so it all depends.
LOL!
I was late, too. I was very cozy in there
lol! thanks!
I've definitely read this in books and websites - that most first babies are late. But, that's it, it doesn't give statistics or reasoning for it.
I do agree there is no rhyme or reason to it. Every baby is different and so is every pregnancy.
Yep. The statistic didn't told true to my baby - I went into labor with Emma three days before my due date. Both DH and I, on the other hand, were firstborns and we were both over a week and a half overdue!
WOW! alot of babies born on their due date!!
I was induced with Sebastian (my first) 9 days AFTER my due date.
Nate was a c-section 3 days before my due date.
I was induced with Quinn 7 days after his due date (EDD 12-13-07 and born on 12-20-07).
Also, I was the first born in my family and was 3 weeks late and delivered by c-section.
Wow... so many on or after EDD!
Women in my family tend to go early. I was three weeks early. Only child to come late was my little sister... and she is still always late to everything she does!
Harvard did a public health study in which they found the AVERAGE length of gestation for first time moms to be 41 weeks and 1 day.
It's average, so some first time moms will deliver early and some will deliver later. And of course that doesn't count inductions and scheduled c-sections.
Andrew was born at 41 weeks and 2 days.
40 weeks is based on Naegele's Rule which he invented in 1744. Amazing how a "myth" continues for so long despite being disproven!
Here's an article about the Lie of the EDD.

Camryn Grace ~ July 6th, 2009 ~ 7lbs 9oz, 20.5"
Brayden Richard Drew ~ December 20, 2010~7lbs 9oz, 20"
Sophie was 12 days early but I had a csection due to her size and the fact that she was kind of stuck up high. LOL. I have a feeling so would have grown past 10lbs and gone way past her due date.
I was also a first born and late. In fact, I was so against coming out that I turned in the 7th month and decided to go breach. My poor mom. LOL!
I was born on my due date.
Zachary came at 39 weeks. I was very swollen and close to developing pre-e so I had a c-section.
