Pregnant after a Loss

Question for 2nd time mommas and your EDD

Though I know every labor is different, I have heard that first times moms usually go past their delivery date.  Last night, a friend of mine, who is a nurse, was sure I would have my baby a couple weeks early.  She had no specific reason (other than maybe the 2 martinis she had consumed) to back this opinion.  But, what I have heard from most people is that first time moms tend to deliever late.  I am due October 2nd, and I REALLY want this baby to be born in October since it is my favorite month.  I'm just curious what your experience was with your first child.  Did you deliver early, on time, or late?  How early or late were you?

  • Kylie was naturally 2 days late. 1st time moms do tend to deliver later... but of course not all. I have a few friends who delivered 2 weeks early.

  • 8 days early here.
  • My DD was born 5 days before her due date, but I was induced for high blood pressure and only dilated to a 2 when I was induced.... so my guess is she would have come around her due date if left to her own devices.
  • EDD 11/29, Induciton set for 11/19, DD was born 11/16
  • I delivered my first at 37wk5days and my second at 38wk1day so I was early both times.

But, for what it's worth, most of the first time moms I have know have gone to their due date and beyond.  Trust me though, once you have your little bundle of joy, it won't matter to you what month they were born in.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • My DD came, after 3 weeks of contractions, 10 days after her EDD.

My DS came (2nd child), after 12 weeks of prodromal labor, ON his EDD, and induced.

  • DD was 1 day early!
  • Harris probably would have been on time or late. I was 39w4d when we induced and my progress was only 2cm and 80% (only a slight change over the 3 weeks leading up to it). I had contrax that took us to L&D at 38w2d, but they didn't lead to anything. He was pretty cozy in there and given that he couldn't get any further down to put more pressure on the cervix (he got stuck and I had a c/s) he probably wouldn't have "pressured" things early. This is my non-medical opinion.

My doctor was convinced my labor would be short, though, so maybe he thought baby and body were primed and ready. I don't know.

ETA: I do have 2 friends who went into labor on their own; one was a few days late and the other was 12 days late.

  • My first came 5 weeks early. Part of that could have been that I was living with my mom who was a heavy smoker, but still baby was bigger than average for 35 weeks.

My second came the day after my due date.

  • I delivered at 40w1d (induced) with my first.  I wasn't even dilated when I went in.
