High Fever & Nothing Else

Anyone else's LO spike a high fever that only subsides a little with Tylenol and no other symptoms other than some breathing changes and lethargy and no appetite as a result of fever?  (He has seen the pedi as of yesterday and I have to call today to report on how he currently is.)  I thought I read something a little while back about others having basically a high fever lasting several days.  Can anyone refresh my memory?  He was supposed to start swim classes today :(

Re: High Fever & Nothing Else

  • DD had a high fever off & on for a few days than it just disapeared. Dr said it was a virus that she was fighting off. No other symptoms but lethargic.

Some children will run a high fever for a few days than get a rash. That is Roseolo I believe.

  • It could be Roseola.  That's exactly what DD had.  She had a highish (100-102) fever for 3 days followed by a very high fever (almost 104) one night that sent us to the ER.  She was poked and prodded for several hours (including a catheter to check for UTI) and in the end they sent us home with antibiotics saying it was probably bacterial.  That was on a Monday.  Her fever got lower but stuck around until Tuesday night.  Tuesday before bed she had no fever at all and still no fever when she woke up Wednesday morning (with no meds).  We had a follow up appointment with the pedi that day at 1030, which I almost cancelled because she seemed perfectly fine.  I'm glad I didn't though, because when I went to change her out of her pj's before the appointment (about 2 hours after she woke up) she was covered from her torso down in a red spotted rash!  I took her to the pedi and as soon as he saw it he said it was Roseola.  He said it's not dangerous once they get past the fever, and doesn't need treatment (he took her off the amox after that).  He said the rash isn't usually bothersome to them.  The rash went away after about 2 days.  He said there is no way to test for it or anything, they just know that's what it is when the rash appears.

It is however very contagious to kids, especially under age 2, prior to the rash appearing.  I would not take him to swim classes if I were you.   You were probably not planning to anyway with him being sick.

    Good Luck!

  • DD pretty much had the same thing a couple of weeks ago.  She had a fever for about 5 days, and at times hovered around 103.  The pedi said it was just a "fever-virus".  I know 3 other kids that had the same thing that week.  I think it is something just going around right now.

We stayed on the motrin/tylenol 3-hour rotation and pushed fluids.

  • DS had this the past few days.. the pedi checked him out to make sure it wasn't anything else..All tests came back negative.

She said there is a virus going around with one or all of the symtpoms of high fever, diarhea, cough, ear infection, lethargic.

  • Yeah, if a rash shows up just as the fever seems to be subsiding, then it's probably roseola. Usually the fever lasts a couple of days and then the rash appears just as the kiddo is starting feel more like themselves.

  • DD had the exact same thing this past weekend.  Pedi said it was likely a virus and as long as she was hydrated, no need to bring her in.  It went away in about 2-3 days.  The fever was starting to freak me out, as Tylenol would not bring it down more than a degree or so, but she kept drinking lots of water/juice.  She's fine now!
  • DS is just getting over this.  Google roseola.

  • DS had a moderate fever (101ish) with no other symptoms and it turned out to be Roseola.  We took him to the pedi who said it was likely just a virus or if he broke out in a rash after 3 days of having the fever it would be Roseola.  Turned out to be the latter.  I wouldn't take him to swim class though...jmo.

  • DD had roseola months ago. She had a very high fever (104.5 at one point). A rash broke out the same day the fever dissappeared.

She also just got over what the doctor diagnosed as a virus. She had a fever for 5 days (sometimes up to almost 103), cough, no appetite, very tired and cranky. I took her to the pedi to make sure it wasn't an ear infection or strep. Both negative.

  • Thanks ladies!  We are going into Day 4 of fever so we will see which one it is!  MD checked him out again today and saw no signs of dehydration and said he wouldn't be surprised if the rash shows up soon and if he ran a fever again tonight.  Sigh..good to know that either way, hopefully he is on his way to mending.  Not looking forward to the rash though!
