Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Traveling with a 1yo

Okay, so my husband and I are taking our 1yo to visit my parents at the end of June...he will be a little over 14 months at that time.  It is a 9 hour drive.  Any suggestions on the best way to strap a hyperactive, loves to walk, busy-body 14 monther in a carseat for 9 LONG HOURS?!?!?!?!  I'm sure he'll do fine most of the time because he loves to ride in the car.  BUT, we are going to be leaving in the morning and driving all day.  Will he not be tired enough to go to sleep that night?  We can't do the drive during the night thing, so that's out of the question.  Anyone have experience with road trips?

Re: Traveling with a 1yo

  • My only suggestion would be to drive at night.  Why can't you?

Second suggestion, lots of stops (get the leash) to let him run around.

Third, a portable DVD player.  I am an anti-tv mommy, but I DO throw in a DVD for any car ride over 90 mins.

Fourth, a bunch of new toys, books and the most loved/favorite snacks.  You dole them out every hour (taking the already played with toys away).

And you only trade em out when he gets SUPER cranky - not when he looks bored or stops playing with it.  This helps teach attention spans.

Fifth - benedryl (I am only half kidding).

  • We did about a 10 hour drive when DS was 15 months but we did do it during the night.  We took LOTS of snacks and drinks, bought new toys (that we didnt give him till the drive) and only gave one toy at a time and let him get board with that before we offered a different toy.  A portable dvd player would be great too (we have the one that straps to the seat so he cant hold it and mess it up).  We did make a lot of stops, let him get out and run around.  He slept on and off but because we were hauling a camper we had to stop a lot more often for gas and he would wake up every time but the cat naps (hour here and there) seemed to work well for him.

  • We just did a 7 hour trip last weekend. I tried to leave around her nap time and then stopped during her meal/snack times. We let her move around, play with some toys, diaper change and ate. She did nap when driving but did sleep that night without any major issues.
