swallow study results

Well, we are back from our adventures in Charleston.  :) Aiden's swallow study showed a slight improvement in his swallowing (though not as much as the surgeon had hoped for.)  He still aspirated on thin liquids but not on nectar consistency (which is the improvement bc he did aspirate on nectar last time).  He did a scope to look at the cleft repair- it seems intact.  But, he said the only way to know for sure is to do another sedated bronchoscopy.  So, the plan for now is to wean him off of honey thickened liquids to nectar consistency.  He will stay on nectar for the next two months. During his speech therapy we are going to work on him swallowing thin liquids (they are hoping he aspirated today bc he is not used to thin liquids.)  We will see surgeon again in 2 months- at that point he will decide if we need to do another sedated bronchoscopy or a swallow study.  Def not the best results- but I had anticipated it.
(sorry I don't have time to retype this- so I cut and pasted from an email)  :)

  • yay! Progress is progress, right?

Hopefully he keeps improving and does okay on the thin liquids soon enough. Good luck!

  • I'm sorry you didn't get better results, but he did have some improvement & that's good!!!

I hope he is able to avoid the bronchoscopy.

  • Yes, progress is progress...and I am happy for that!  I just wish he didn't have to deal with this.  :)

    Oh, I definitely hear you!

I just re-read and hope my PP didn't come across wrong - I didn't mean to downplay his continued issues, I was just trying to emphasize the small positive for you and didn't do a very good job. sorry!

I completely understood what you were saying.  :)  It is nice to be reminded that small progress is still progress.  Sometimes it is hard to look at the small steps when so much is going on with him.  Thanks for the encouragement!!!  :)

  • I'm happy to hear that he has made progress!  I know it's frustrating (trust me!) but he will get there soon.  Hugs to you and your family....
