How necessary is a changing table?

My parents have a dresser that I love (and love it even more since its free), but its a tall dresser so we couldn't use it as a changing table. Should we:

A) spring for a new low dresser to use as a changing table;

get a non-dresser changing table; or

C) not worry about either and just change Baby's diaper on the floor?

We invested in a dresser and purchased a changing pad to go on top ... dd will then be able to use the dresser for "ever" ... a changing table isn't really worth the money since you won't use it for a long period of time but given your situation, I would go for option b ... while you might frequently change on the floor, in my opinion you'll definitely want a table where you have everything at your fingertips ... I'd keep the dresser you love and maybe invest in a much lower cost changing table w/shelves, etc. You can definitely find them anywhere for close to nothing at all ...

We are getting a dresser with a changing pad. That way, when she is out of diapers, she will have a dresser for her big girl furniture. We also have alifetime crib, so hopefully this set we buy now will last her thorugh her teen years (we hope!) :-)

I agree with the first poster. Take that dresser and then buy a second-hand changing table. You won't use it for very long, so no sense in buying a brand new one. I found a changing table on CL for $40 in great condition.

If you have the room I say keep your tall dresser, and buy Ikea Trofast or Exepdit and change on top of that- that way you'll have a change table and awesome toy/book storage too! I think this will be my plan except I love love the stokke change table but I don't know if I can justify the cost.

I don't think you'll be wanting to get down on the floor to change the baby that first month. I agree w. the pp and get a seperate changer if you have the space. Or something you could use as a bookshelf.

We put a twin sized bed in out baby's room, we change her on that. Changing tables only work for you a year or 2, we don't have money or space for that kind of waste...

I wouldn't trade my separate changing table for the world. I liked that it had storage on the shelves, but then we can move it out of the room when we're done. It was inexpensive, and now that we're expecting #2, I like that I can leave the dresser in DD's room and bring the changing table into #2's room. And we are still changing DD on the changing table and she's over a year old. When #2 arrives we'll switch to changing her on the bed that we have in her room.

If you have the space in the nursery, I saw get a cheap changing table. You're not going to want to change a NB on the floor 4 times a night

If you have an IKEA close by, they have some reasonably priced changing tables, and even one that is cloth and folds away. I like PP idea of buying one of their square bookshelves too.
