One of my boys, Jacob, has a VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect). It means he has a hole in the wall dividing the left and right ventrical in his heart. He has been doing fine and is eating, thriving and is comfortable. We have been seeing a cardiologist to monitor it for now. At the last visit there was no change. He then said that we would look again when he was 6 months (in June) and if there is still no change, then we would discuss surgery (meaning open heart surgery). I'm trying not to worry and praying that is closes on its own.
I was just wondering if there was anyone else whose LO had one and what the outcome was. Thanks!
Re: XP: Anyone's LO have a VSD??
My DD had a VSD. It's one of the most common congenital heart defects, and it ordinarily closes on its own. Did your cardio say anything about where it was located in the wall, and how big it was? DD's was mid-muscular, so right in the middle of the wall, and was moderate in size. Our cardio told us that in that location, there was an excellent chance that the VSD would close on its own. When we went in 2 weeks after she was born, there was no change. After that, we saw her cardiologist at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and we'll see him again in June. At 3 months it was "small" rather than "moderate" in size. At 6 months it was "smaller" but still there. At 1 year, he said it was "tiny".
All that said, he had expected it to be gone by the time she was 6 months old and it wasn't. He didn't seem concerned about it at all, though, because he was still seeing some progress. Now he says that it's so little that if it never resolves it probably won't matter.
Like I said, VSDs are very very common and generally resolve on their own. I hope things go well for your and your LO!
DD had a patent ductus, an ASD, and a VSD at birth. At this point, the ductus closed, the ASD is gone, and the VSD is so tiny that our next appt isn't for another 2 years. For her it causes a heart murmur, but is really no big deal at all.
At premature birth, my son had pda, asd and vsd. pda and asd both closed before he turned 1, however the vsd remained. My son is 3 yrs old now and we see the cardiologist about every 9 months. The hole is at 6mm in size, however growing tissue where the hole is at. So far, no surgeries are being considered and he has not been on any medication for it since he was 18 months old.
For now, they are continuing to monitor and they have told me that as long as he is active and the hole does not change (increase) in size, then they will just leave it. They have said there are several ppl with holes in their heart and are doing fine, some don't even know they have one....
DS has a medium-sized VSD. Whether or not it closes largely depends on the size. It could go either way for us. Fortunately it is not causing him any problems so we are in "wait and see" mode with the cardiologist. He gets an echo done about once a year.
