Question if you still eat sushi (raw)

I was wondering if you still have sushi on occasion, do you avoid raw tuna because of the higher mercury?

I work in a high end sushi bar that I completely trust and have been having a little sushi every week, like a tuna roll or something similar. My old OB was ok with as well it as my current midwife. They both said as long as it is in moderation and not in the sashimi or sushi form it was ok since it is such a small amount they use for a roll.

Just curious if anyone else is still enjoying raw tuna in small amounts. I read a post the other day about sushi and it seemed I was the only one that even touched the stuff, let alone tuna!

Re: Question if you still eat sushi (raw)

  • I'm only eating the rolls at our place that have been made with shellfish because it's cooked.

I just don't want to risk it with the raw stuff.

  • I have had raw sushi maybe three or four times during this pregnancy.
  • I am not eating any kind of raw sushi, but will eat anything that is cooked or just vegetables or Kimbap!

However, I knew a friend who kept on eating raw sushi.. and she had a healthy baby. But I am sure that is like the same as not following any kind of rule in pregnancy.. you are just increasing the odds of something going wrong.

So like I said.. I just keep to the cook stuff.

  • i haven't had any sushi since my bfp, but i don't avoid tuna. i probably have a can once a week, and that's three ounces. most resources say you can have it a couple times a week without a problem.

i love grilled hamachi kama when we do wind up in a sushi place. and i think we've hit all the izakaya places within driving distances. the one we went to on sunday had tiny fried baby mackerel... yum!

  • I am not eating any raw fish.  Which sucks because I totally am dying for some ahi poke!

My Dr told me to avoid any large fish (cooked or otherwise) due to the mercury.  Living on Maui makes the whole thing very difficult.  (Not that we get our fish from here - tuna come from the Philippines.)

I have, however, indulged in fish tacos and fish and chips.  1 of each.  Both are made with Mahi Mahi (yes, big fish and taboo).

Japanese women do not stop eating sushi!  I just wish my Dr was a little bit more flexible.  I can drink coffee, but no tuna......

And I would kill or die for some back-East fish and chips - salt and vinegar..... grrrr!

  • I have avoided the raw stuff. I am just not that brave. But I am lucky my favorite is eel and it is cooked.
  • I eat only the cooked shellfish ones, and totally craving a spicy tuna roll. I'm not indulging till after, but I certainly have "indulged" with other things. Moderation is key :)
  • I have had sushi a handful of times with both pregnancies.  I do cut back on the tuna a bit, but I still get my spicy tuna roll and a couple pieces of tuna nigiri.  Then I do other fish for the rest.  I don't get anything cooked, LOL.

    Mmm.

  • I don't but it's mainly becuase of my location. If I were closer to the east or west coast I probably would simply becuase it would be fresher. Being in the middle and in the south it's not as good as on the coasts.I traveled a lot to NYC and LA and it's just not the same here, it's still good, just not the same.

  • I used to eat a philly roll every other day before being pregnant. Since being pregnant I have had 3 philly rolls. And I eat tuna maybe once a week.

i hear that a lot when these sushi conversations come up, but japanese health regulations just aren't like ours. they won't even import our beef. our cdc and fda have been straining for the last decade and i worry about a lot of food... sushi is just the one i miss most!

Plus, I think sushi in Japan is higher quality. I have had a lot of bad sushi in the states and I don't think a lot of people can tell the difference.

  • I don't avoid anything except cigarette smoke...so yes, I still eat raw sushi (incl. tuna).  Not as often as I'd like b/c we just don't eat out much haha
  • I've only had sushi once durring pregnancy, but I got mostly baked stuff.  I was to scared to go totally raw.  my BIL (who went to sushi with us) got a baked roll, but the fish was not fully cooked & I had a few pieces.  I think it may have been tuna.  It was super staisfying because it still had some of that raw taste (which I think some fish taste better raw) but it was cooked a little which made me feel more secure.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I'd bet money your words are ignorant.
  • I have raw sushi probably once every two weeks. I avoided it in 1st tri, but now I'm back to eating it. My midwife was fine with it, and I only eat it from a restaurant that I've frequented for years and trust, and I know other people that eat there too -- never had a problem with food poisoning or unfresh fish. For sushi to be sushi grade in the US, it has to be flash frozen to kill any parasites, and the handling is pretty particular. So basically the main potential for you to get sick lies in the restaurants' handling and possibly getting food poisoning if it's not fresh, kept at the right temp, etc. I'm not concerned about this from a restaurant that I trust, and since you are something like 40 times more likely to contract food poisoning from COOKED chicken in the US, I'll keep eating my raw sushi quite happily. I usually just do rolls with salmon because they are my favorite, but I have had small amounts of raw tuna and wasn't too concerned. A tiny amount on the rare occasion isn't going to lead to mercury poisoning. I always find it funny when people say they don't want to take the chance with sushi but will quite happily eat unheated lunch meat or drink n/a beer or wine, etc. We take risks every day, but some are ones that we deem higher because it's unfamiliar to us. The risk in sushi isn't higher just because it's a more specialty item than, say, lunch meat. There are risks in eating both, and it's low.
  • I have had raw sushi a handful of times, but have cut back on rolls with tuna.  Which is hard, since those are my fave.

  • I still eat sushi. I have never heard the just eat the rolls rule, I think it's odd cuz there is still raw fish in some rolls. However, I still eat my nigiri and my sashimi. I try to avoid the tuna, I have had a few pieces here and there. But I mostly stick with ebi (shrimp), slamon, and my favorite spider rolls! I love the deepfried soft shell crab! lol.

I'd love a rainbow roll right now! I haven't had any raw, but I've had cooked and veggie types twice. I'm usually eating seafood twice a week, mostly shrimp and canned tuna, but nothing raw.
  • I will not eat the raw stuff during my pregnancy. I have never in my life been sick from sushi, but it's pretty easy for me to avoid it (I don't work in a sushi restaurant and I'm SO JEALOUS) so I just do. However, my doctor also told me to avoid tuna in general because of mercury. That means tuna steaks and sushi tuna. It's a pain and it's probably being overcautious but it might as well come out somewhere, since I'm not being a stickler about most anything else. I eat soft pasteurized cheeses, I had a glass of wine once, I'll eat a deli sandwich, and I'll drink the occasional coke or cup of tea. I don't think a tuna roll once a week is going to hurt you.

I have been eating the cooked stuff and the vegetarian stuff. I LOVE IT. And the seaweed is packed with DHA, so it's good for you. I told my hubby I want him to bring me tuna rolls as a "push present." LOL.

to be honest, i'm more concerned about the rice, which sits there all day at room temp with fishy hands going in and out of it.

i also won't eat raw food until delivery (not like carrot sticks and apples... real raw food). if i were bacteria, i would love me some rice or nuts sitting in water for several days...

  • I only eat the cooked stuff...and I REALLY miss the raw!

But I am one of those if you are not supposed to do it then I don't people.  I have not had cold lunch meat since I found out and avoid pretty much every other nono on the list.

That being said I am looking forward to D-Day for more than just baby girl!  I fantasize about a cold turkey sandwhich on white with mayo and a glass of red wine and a HUGE plate of sushi...mmmmmmm

I know where I work, all the sushi chef's must wear new gloves for each order. There is no fishy hands going in and out of rice. The rice is made each day at 4:00 and is in the warmer until 10 then gets tossed out. I would say it is completly clean. I know the cutting boards do have cross contamination of fish on them, but if there is an allergy or something they change them out. I am not concerned at all about the raw fish risk, more about the mercury.

  • I still have sushi at least once a week, and I've cut down on the tuna (both cooked and raw) but haven't eliminated it. Mercury does worry me a little, but I know I'm not eating anywhere near enough tuna for it to be a problem.

  • My doctor said sushi once a week is fine.  That was the only stipulation she put on it.
