I know I ultimately have to make the decision, but would like your thoughts on the topic. We aren't starting solids until DS in 6 months (have a month to go) and have been BF 90% of the time with a formula bottle once or twice a day. I got sick and the meds have decreased my supply dramatically. So much that most of the time I have to give DS a bottle after he nurses. I stopped taking the meds (cough suppressant) and my supply has only increased a little. So do I try to get my supply back to only cut back down in a month when we start solids? WWYD?
thanks in advance ladies!
Re: What do you all think? re:weaning from BF
This exactly. It's a huge PITA to try and increase your supply (in my experience anyway). Now if you were planning on BFing past 6 months then it's really a personal decision. I missed BFing a lot at first but I'm definitely enjoying the freedom now.
Baby's main source of nutrition will still be from either nursing or formula for a while, even after they start solids - so you may not really even be "cutting back" on breast/bottle-feeding.
If you don't feel ready to wean yet, then try to build your supply back up and see how it goes. My supply dropped at 7.5 months unexpectedly (well, unexpectedly at the time and then I got my first PP period, which I think was the cause) and it was hard trying to get it back up, so it felt like a "natural" time for me to wean DS. It didn't hurt at all and he had an easy transition to FF.
You will not be cutting down on how much the baby nurses when you introduce solids.
Solids are just for practice. Their main source of nutrition is BM (or formula).
