BG 3.0s and snap conversion, etc. questions ...

Hey ladies ... so, I absolutely love my bg organics w/snaps but I also invested in some used 3.0s (why? IDK ... just like buying cloth these days ... my new plessure Big Smile and I honestly wanted to try them out vs. the organics)  ... huhm ... been hearing really horrible stuff about the microfiber, etc. (they hold stink, the velcro, etc.). Finally attended to the less than steller feedback that they receive AFTER I purchased some.

Anywho, is there anything that I can do w/them to ensure that the "chronic stink" stays away before I'm having to do some drastic "intervention (bleech, etc.)?" Like maybe soaking the inserts right when I take them off or something?

Also, is it pretty easy to convert the velcro into snaps? I don't know how to sew other than a quick him or a button Embarrassed ... is it complicated? I'm not really into it ... I can see how the velcro would definitely become an issue down the line. Is there some quick "how to" website that I might check out? Is it something that I can do w/out a sewing machine? I know I'd have to buy a snap "thingy machine" but ... TIA

  • no idea on the micro stink....I had it and ended up getting rid of the microfiber and going hemp, no issues.

As for converting to snaps, you either need a snap press or snap pliers.  The press is awesome but much more expensive than pliers

And Here is a tutorial :)

  • Well don't just count them out yet.  Almost our entire stash is BG 3.0s and we love them.  We don't have stink issues, and I actually prefer velcro to snaps.  So don't get yourself in a tizzy already.  I've only had to strip them once, and that was b/c I was using too much detergent.  DS is 27 months old and they are still going strong.  I haven't replaced or repaired a single one.

The main way to avoid the stink is to not use too much detergent.  And I add some vinegar to my cold pre-rinse.  That's it.  No bleach or other drastic interventions.  I don't pretreat or soak them or anything like that, they go into the pail just as they are until wash day.  And I only wash twice a week.

As far as snap conversions, I did buy 2 used BG AIOs that had damaged velcro, and I did have them converted.  But I used someone on Etsy to do it.  I'm not a sewer by any means.  It was relatively inexpensive.  And I think there's someone on here that does it too, but I can't remember who.

  • We've done ok with microfiber stink...going on 2 years of using the same BGs.  I did convert them to snaps though because the velcro got to be useless after a while.

I ended up buying a snap press from thesnapstore.com since DH plans to use it for other projects.  Looks like mrs.a gave you a good tutorial!

  • Thanks ladies for the GREAT info ... I'll calm down Stick out tongue ... I'm just a bit of a control freak and always trying to "ward off" any issues ... coo coo crazy I know ...
  • Not crazy.  I almost didn't go with BG because of the stink and aplix issues I read.  I got two before DD was born and was SURE I wouldn't like them.

I love them.  I adore them.  I think they are perfect for everything except nighttime, and even then they work in a pinch with some hemp.  My stash is now 80% BG 3.0.  Yeah, some of my aplix isn't gorgeous, but I don't really care too much - it still works.  And I don't have issues with MF-specific stink.

  • I never had an issue with MF stink, but I stopped using it a long time ago just because I wanted more natural fibers.  I use hemp and bamboo now.

There are lots of people that offer snap service, and it's relatively inexpensive and of course your diapers will look great for a long time.

That said, I use mine with the velcro.  I like it just fine :)

  • There are also sellers on etsy who will convert your dipes to snaps for you.  I find peroxide is wonderful to add to the wash to prevent sink and stains.  If I have a particularly nasty diaper I splash some peroxide on the dipe before I put it in the was then let it sit for 5 min then was as usual.  Haven't had a problem since.
