Working Moms

Working mom that bf...

How long did you bf? Were you able to keep up your supply and pumping. I'm only on my third week of being back to work (things are going well so far) and I'm hoping that I can bf my little guy until a year old. I need some good inspirations/stories because everyone around me (besides my dh) is like "your supply is going to drop off" or "you probably wont be able to pump to a year". WTF?

Re: Working mom that bf...

  • We nursed for 14 months!  My supply did drop off but I ended up pumping three times a day (twice at work and once before bed).  I had the luxury of going at lunchtime to nurse my DS but I was able to do it (with a lot of determination, believe me, I wanted to quit a million times, especially when I was only pumping 2-3 oz sometimes!)  If you have to supplement a little don't be sad about that.  Plus when they get older they eat more solid food so they don't drink as much.  good luck and tell those naysayers to mind their own business!

  • I'm still doing it, and still pumping more than DD drinks every day!  It can be done.  I had a lot of people tell me it would never work, too, but as long as you are consistent with pumping it will be just fine.  The only two things that have caused a dip in my supply are AF and the one time I had a high fever for a week, but both of those are just temporary.

Here's a good book to read.  It's got good information and is also just fun!  Good luck to you.

  • I pumped for DD until 11.5 months and she self-weaned the morning/evening feedings at 22 months.  We had to supplement 1-2 bottles a week with formula starting at 7 months because of business travel.

DS turns 1 year old today and hasn't had a drop of formula.  I'm going to keep pumping for a few weeks until he starts drinking more cow's milk at daycare.  But I plan to stop pumping soon and just nurse morning/evening until he's done.

    It can be done.  :-)

  • You can do it! I'm still bf'ing. DD nursed until a year and then we introduced cow's milk. She still nurses first thing in the morning and before bed. Pumping can be a pain, but you can absolutely do it. Just stay committed!
  • I BF until dd was 14 months. I pumped at work and as long as I ate right and drank plenty of water I was able to keep my supple. Also, what helps is if you nurse on demand at home. That really made a difference.

  • I am still pumping once a day at work, in fact right now, and still nursing at home 3-4 times a day plus more on weekends. You CAN DO IT! I make sure to stay hydrated and be relaxed while pumping.

  • Don't listen to the naysayers!!!

I nursed DS full time (and pumped at work) till 12 months and I've continued to nurse him at bedtime till now (he's 16 months).

It is a huge committment and hard ( i won't lie to you), but you can be successful! You have to carve out time to pump at work, and I had to pump a lot at home to keep up, but it is do-able and DS never had a drop of formula!

set little goals for yourself and never let yourself stop on a bad day!

  • Also- if you have to supplement during the day some, that is ok too- keep pumping and nursing !!

  • I went back to work when DS was 4 months and pumped until he was 12 months.  We continued nursing on weekends, nights, and mornings until around 14 months.  Definitely do-able.  Not always easy or fun, but do-able.  GL!

  • I did it until she turned 1.  It's a lot of commitment, but if you stay on a schedule, drink your water, and get your calories, you can keep up your supply.  Good luck!

  • I plan on going for at least a year. I've been working for almost 3 months now, my supply has not really gone down (slightly, but still enough to feed her).  Once you are in a routine, its not that difficult. I'm pumping now! ha.
  • DD 15 months, DS still going strong. Pumped for 1 year with both, then dropped pumping at work and nursed am and pm.

  • I pumped at work until my DS was 12 months (nursed until 15+ months) and I never once needed to suppliment with formula.  I worried about whether I was pumping enough, but eventually I just decided DS would get what he gets and I wouldn't stress about hitting some quota for the day.  The amount fluxuated day by day.  My son was consistently 90% for height and weight, so the doctor said I was doing fine.  Sometimes I got really sick of pumping at work, but I'd just make it to the weekend and then 2 days at home was enough of a break to get me through the next week.

You can do it!  Prove those people wrong!

  • I pumped till DD1 was 7 1/2 months, then continued to nurse at home and do formula during daycare till 1 year (she self-weaned at that time). This time, I plan to pump till 1 year, it is going better this time and I am more patient about it. You can do it!! Set mini-goals and just be proud for whatever you can do.

  • I was back to work full-time at 8 weeks and pumped with my first child up until she was 8 months old.  I ended up being pregnant with #2 at that point, so my supply tanked and I couldn't get it back or I would have gone for a year.  My daughter was a BIG eater too, but I never had any problems keeping up with the pumping, having extras here and there and running short here in there.  I found that I have the best luck pumping on my way to work (yep, I have an adapter that plugs into the car) after I dropped off the kids at daycare. You usually have a bigger supply in the morning, so I pump then for my "extras" and then I just pump throughout the day when he would normally nurse if I was with him.  I've found that, after going through this for the second time, there are so many old wives tales out there about BFing, so you just have to decide that you are going to do it and ignore what everyone else says:)
  • I only made it 4 months with DD.  That was mostly due to non-work-related feeding issues.  But I'm already at 3 months with DS and going strong.  I think we'll last through the summer and I'll wean when school starts again in the fall.  That'll be 6 months.  I need my prep period at work back!
  • I BF for 13 mos and pumped for 11.  My supply did drop near the end, but not b/c I was working.  It dropped b/c DD started eating more solids and AF returned.

  • We nursed for 19 months without needing formula at all!  I really liked the book The Milk Memos.  Once I had to take Fenugreek for a few days when my supply got low.  Other than that, I just drank tons of water, ate a lot (seems like I was always starving) and had oatmeal for breakfast.  We've had moms on here who pump in their cars, bathrooms, hotels, all sorts of things.  You can do it!
  • Just wanted to add that I don't mean to insult formula feeding mothers.  If you end up needing to supplement, it really isn't a big deal and you shouldn't beat yourself up.  But it's definitely possible to make it a year!  And when a year came, it was soooo nice to be done pumping and just nursing am and pm.  :)
  • With my first, I had supply problems from the beginning, but I still pumped for her for a year and nursed her till 15 months.

My second is 11 months old today.  I've been back to work since she was 4 months.  She's never had a drop of formula and I've actually donated 500-600 oz of breastmilk to the milk bank.

  • completely possible :) As the pp all state--it is hard work but you can do it!! I nursed/pumped (2-3 xs and nursed exclusively on the wk ends) until DD was 12 months then nursed on nights and wks until she was 14 months while we weaned. My supply dipped but I would increase water and ate better, plus i took fenugreek. I also travelled 5 days a week, every week for 4 from when DD was 3 months until 7 months) and managed to keep my supply by pumping 3 x a day and then every 3 hrs at night (that was rough)!.

     GL!!

  • I'm still pumping, really hoping to make it to a year! I'm still pumping twice a day at work and once before bed, and I have about 50 bags of milk in my freezer, so I'm pretty sure we'll make it :)

If I wasn't really determined and slightly stubborn, I may have given up, but I'm really glad I've stuck to it. I've also been able to donate a lot of milk to orphans in Haiti and sick babies in need.

  • I pumped for 12 mos, Bf'd for 13.5 mos.  DS has milk protein intolerance so he couldn't drink reg formula, got horrible gas pain from soy formula, and flat out refused to drink any special formula the allergist gave him so it was BM or else!  (DH joked the DS was giving me no choice, he knew what he wanted and would take no substitutes, lol!).  Luckily I was able to keep up and keep and marginal freezer stash as long as I drank lots of water and ate lots of things with oatmeal in them, took occasional fenugreek if my supply started to dip.  And my job is really crazy too, I work in the operating room, and from 8 wks on I would go as long as 8 hrs without a pump break, so it's totally doable :)

  • Pumped until 11 months of age (she never got any formula), breastfed until 22 months. It can definitely be done!

  • DS turns one on Friday.  Yesterday was my last day of pumping at work (YAY!).  I returned to work at 7 weeks pp and DS has never had a drop of formula.  It took a lot of committment (pumping 4 times a day at work and once on the weekends) but it was worth it!  I'm going to continue to do morning and night feedings for DS for a couple more months because we are getting ready to move and I don't want to push to many changes on him.  1 year is totally possible as you can see by all these replies!
  • I nursed/pumped for 13 months!!!   I

  • You can definitely do it!  DD is 10 minths old, and I still pump and BF.  Be prepared for your supply to vary, depending on AF, illness, and stress.  Mine has dropped and rebounded several times.  Just keep going, drink water, eat oatmeal, keep BFing when you are with LO.

Take their doubt as a challenge - every time someone says "You probably won't make it", tell yourself "I'll show them!"

Set goals along the way - make it to one month back at work, then three, then LO's six month mark, then nine months, and then you will be so close to a year you will want to make it to that goal, too.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • I'm still bf'ing and pumping at work but ditto not being hard on yourself if you end up having to supplement a little.  I was so sad when I had to but just keep in mind that at least your LO is still getting mostly BM.  I got over it quickly.

My supply varies and if I have a big drop fenugreek or mother's milk tea has helped me to maintain my supply.  GL it is totally possible!

  • Nursed Billy for 13 months - pumped until he was a year.  The last month my supply dropped so he was taking one 4 oz bottle of formula a day - which I stupidly beat myself up over.  You can do it!

  • I BF #1 for 15 months and #2 for 17 months. I pumped during the work day and nursed outside of work and on weekends. It totally can be done!  The key is to not overfeed - BF babies don't continually increase intake like FF do (since BM changes to meet baby's need). workandpump.com is a great resource for BF/working moms.
  • I'm still bf'ing.  I had oversupply issues at first though so was able to stock up my freezer.  I stopped pumping entirely at 10months and DS now just gets frozen bm during the day and I bf him in the am/pm.
