Question for Second time moms

I have a question in your experiance were there any items that websites, books, store checklists tell you to register for but you found you had absolutely no use for.

What are the "can't live without's"...and the "I dont know why we go this"

I'm trying to put together a list of esstentials, there is so much out there and I'm just wondering if as moms do we really use all this stuff?  for example there is a stationary acticity disc which looks similar to a walker except baby doesnt walk in it...are both good to have?  Another friend told me she never used her full size stroller she only used her light weight because the full size was too big.

Any feedback would be helpful, I'm just curious.

Re: Question for Second time moms

  • I highly recommend an infant swing! For a while that's the only way my DD would sleep! I never got an exersaucer (the stationary walker you are talking about). DD LOVED the Jumperoo and Around We Go (which i highly recommend)! DD was walking at 9 months!!

I only have one stroller: Uppa Baby Vista. I plan on getting the attachment seat for the 2nd kiddo for it. I have no complaints about this stroller, we love it!

Basically we had too many clothes, received too many blankets and stuffed animals. DD could care less about stuffed animals. Her blankets are all boxed up (which i didn't even register for).

I came to realize that baby shoes before the walking stage is a waste of money.

I highly recommend one of those velcro swaddle blankets (like Kiddopotamus at BRU), DD relied on that thing!

We never did a bottle warmer and survived just fine!

    GL!!

I couldn't have a walker bc we have steps all over our house. I had an exersaucer (that's the stationary thing) and loved it! We had a jumperoo at my parents and Elise loved that too.

Totally agree w/ T&C on baby shoes... Elise didn't even have any until she was walking.  I loved those socks by Trumpette (they look like shoes.)

We loved our swing and bouncer. I liked simple outfits... one piece rompers and bubbles...

I would skip a big bedding set (bc you don't really use the quilt/blanket) and just find a nice dustruffle and sheet.  It's up to you if you want to do a crib bumper or not.  I did...

I did like our glider and still use it.

If I think of anything else, I'll post back.

  • While I am a 'second time' mom my first time was 18 years ago! *smirk* We had this thing that is probably like the jumperoo everyone is talking about, it was called a jolly jumper. Kat LOVED the thing. She jumped in it every single day for as long as she fit in it...she was so tiny she fit in it until she was like 18 months old. She had a walker that she used 2x and never again, she really didn't like it. The baby swing, which was an old fashioned wind up one we inherited (and passed on) was a GODSEND! She would swing in that thing for hours just content. We will definitely be doing all of those types of things Kat loved again. We had no 'nursery' furniture because I was living with my parents and the room that was Kat's initially was the guest room there and had a double bed in it and all of the furniture that went with it. When we decided I needed that bed instead of the old twin bed I had from when I was a toddler (which Kat still has now at our house) we moved the twin bed into her room, the double into my room, and when she finally outgrew her crib we moved it it away until we gave it to another family member who had a little one. This time we are going to try to do a nice nursery set up. I put together a list the week we found out I was pregnant. I have to find out what all we are going to be getting as gifts from friends and what we are going to have to get otherwise. :)
  • I just had my baby 5 weeks ago and here is what i'm loving:

A swaddling blanket, it's the only way he'll sleep by himself otherwise he wants to be held all the time.

A moby wrap or infant carrier.  It allows me to have both hands free since when my little one wants to be held a lot.   I have both the moby wrap and a becco butterfly, right now I prefer the moby wrap but later I think I'll like the becco.  The moby wrap is a bit faster and more comfortable for me to wear right now.

My Breastfriend nursing pillow, I use it with  almost every nursing session.  It is much firmer than the boppy and has a strap that goes around your waist so you can position it at the right level.

I really like my glider too.   I end up rocking him to sleep almost every night and it's better than pacing the room with him.

What I wish I had did differently, was I wish I had gotten an arms reach cosleeper instead of a pack n play.   Our bed was too high for the cosleeping option so I thought the extra money for the cosleeper was a waste.   However the bassinet in the pack n play only goes to 15 pounds while the cosleeper mini goes up to 23 pounds and the full goes up to 30 pounds.   Since my 5 week old is almost 13 pounds I would have liked the extra weight allowance the cosleeper gives.
