Job-hunting while pregnant!

Guess I can add myself to the list of unemployed people out there.  Long story.

Got fired last night.  Apparently, there were a few complaints from clients.  Although from my boss's attitude towards me for the past month or two, he's being looking for a way to get rid of the "woman who dared to get knocked up while in his employ".

I'm kind of fine with it, and so is SO...but at the same time, who the heck is going to hire a 4-month pregnant woman?  We do need the extra income at least for a few more months.

Ideas, anyone?

  • I have my own business but business hasnt been "good" and DH is still in grad school so extra income wise I watch my niece and a friends daughter its an extra 400$ a month for full time day care for both of them... Well BIL doesnt pay for my niece but he does work around the house, or on the car, or what not in trade... it all comes out in the wash

  • Would any contract/temp positions work for you for the next few months and aim for a perm position whenever you are ready to go back after the baby?

Hmm...that would be a great idea - but my friends who have kids are all SAHM's, and I don't really live in an area I would feel comfortable watching a stranger's kids.  I would watch my niece, who's 5 months old, but my BIL is currently being a SAHD - since he has no documents and can't find a job.

I actually think that's my best bet at this point...

  • Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that . . . I'm going to PM in a second.  I think I may have some ideas for you as I have a small network in that area . . .

  • Gah! I'm so sorry! Like PP said, temp/contract work might be a good option. Whatever you choose to do, I am hoping for the best for you. Keep us updated!

  • So sorry to hear! I fear I may be in the same situtation once my office is aware that I am KN. Temping might be a good idea, that way you could get your foot in the door somewhere and maybe have the opportunity to return at a later date. Good luck.

Oh my goodness - that flat out sucks.

Do you have established relationships with any clients you had?  If so, do you think any of them would hire you on a contracted basis until you have the baby?

I'm thinking contract work (with a known stop date) is going to be your best bet right now, unless you aren't showing and could try to pull off the not pregnant thing.  But, then you may run into the whole "why did you have such a short stay at company xyz" when interviewing later on.

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry to hear that! I second the temping and mostly because I know your line of work. People need and hire temps ALL the time. I'm sure people would hire you w/o a problem because most temps only stick around for 3 months either way.
  • I am currently employed right now, but I work as a sales associate in a department store full time and I'm standing and walking ALL DAY. The more weight I gain, the more it's taking its toll on my body. I want to get something else before I'm huge, something where I can sit down all day but I'm starting to show and I can't hide it much longer. I've interviewed and applied to lots of other companies but I haven't been hired. I think a temp agency is my best bet also

  • Sorry to hear your bad news.  I lost my job a week before Christmas - so I know how much it sucks!  Just something to consider - I have been offered temp jobs and have turned them down.  Not sure if unemployment benefits run the same in every state but in CT if I were to take a temp job, when it is over (if I haven't found a pemanent job) and I need to reapply for unemployment, they will re-calculate my earnings and I will get a whole lot less in benefits than if I didn't work the temp job at all.  It is really frustrating because it discourages people from doing whatever work they can find, but at the same time, I need to pay my mortgage and cannot take the chance in case I'm not able to find a good permanent job right away.  Good luck!
  • Been there, done that.

I sub at the school 3 days a week and work at a law office 1.5 days a week. School is almost over though, so I am hoping the law office adds a couple days - if not I will be looking for something else to do, mostly to keep me occupied because I can't sit at home all day!

From someone who did the job hunting thing pregnant - DONT TELL! I told and lost several jobs I was more than qualified for. One guy even yelled at me for telling him. The school and the law office already knew I was pregnant and didn't care so I guess I got lucky there.

Check with a temp service because that would probably be your best bet - we live in a rural area so there realy arent' any temp services.

  • I feel you pain girl! I just moved to this area with my DH. I'm at a loss to figure out how/what to do.
  • I'm sorry to hear that!! I know it has to be a very hard situation. Do you have any previous companies that you worked for and left on good terms? I was in a situation where we just moved back to my home state and when I went to visit my old work they offered me my job back! I wasn't sure about working but I loved my old job and its a great job! I'm an RN and I will work 2 weeks out of every month so I will still get time with the baby and make some extra money for the family. Just thought this may help....GOOD LUCK!!
  • I'm in the same boat.  I have had several interviews, but as soon as they see the belly I'm done.  Sad but true....I'm a hard worker and am having such a hard time finding something as well.  Good luck to you!
  • I lost my job at the end of the year because of cutbacks and them dropping the entire department.  It was a new-ish job for me, as I quit my old one to take this job as it was an upgrade in pay, benefits, and management.  I wasn't there long enough to apply for unemployment, so I'm working freelance till the baby's born.  Then DH wants me to take a year off to be a SAHM.

I have a friend I went to college with who's working on a start up business and I think I'm going to spend some of my time while being stuck at home working on that with him.  I've already worked with him on several of the "software engineering" documents, and would like to start on a prototype in the next few months.  I can also continue to do some freelance work, but there's no way anyone's going to hire me full time when they see me, it was hard enough getting a job as a chick.  At least a couple of my interviews went something like "Dr. so-and-so said that you were one of his best students, K-male-name.  Oh, you're not [male name].  Why do you only use a first initial on your resume?  Sorry, the job was already filled.  I guess my secretary forgot to tell you that you didn't need to come in."

I'd suggest trying temp work.  No one really cares about you being pregnant when they don't have to pay for your benefits or have to worry about how to replace you.
