High-Risk Pregnancy

New to board...GD

Hello Ladies,

I am new to this board. I just recently found out I have GD and am 30 weeks PG with our first LO. My meter is being sent to me tomorrow and I am meeting with a nutritionist on Thursday. This whole thing is coming as quite a shock to me. I do have some family history of adult onset diabetes, which might help explain some of this to me.

I have been having a very hard time coping with this reality. It has brought on many new concerns about this entire pregnancy making me be in somewhat of funk. If you have any advice to offer please feel free.

Thanks and look forward to sharing stories and concerns with you all.

Re: New to board...GD

  • Honestly?   It just seems overwhelming at first. Once you get into the swing of things it will be fine.

I followed the diet to a t.  I made sure I did moderate  exercise after every meal (10 minutes of marching in fromt of the tv, vaccuming, go up and own the stairs).  That activity will do wonders to keeping your numbers in check.

I had no complications as a results of the GD.  My baby was induced at 40 weeks and was 7 lbs 7 oz. Granted I had a section as the induction and I did not get along but who is to say that I would not have ended up with a section anyways?

The risk of a big baby is only real if you have uncontrolled GD.

The minute you deliver the placenta, the diabetes is gone.    The only way you will still be diabetic after delivery is if in fact you had undiagnosed type 2.

A GD diet is simply eating the way we all should be eating anyways. Lots of fresh veggies, whole grains and avoiding processed high sugar/carb foods.

    You will be fine!

  • First, take a deep breath.  It isn't as bad as it seems.  They screen more actively to avoid complications from GD, which means, hey, good news that they caught it! =)

With that said, it is totally overwhelming and hard not to feel guilty somehow.  But the diet is not so bad, and you don't have long to go!  I was diagnosed around 17 weeks, so hey, 10 weeks in my book, not so bad! =)

Essentially the diet will just help you better balance your food choices, and watch high sugars in the meantime.

I actually felt SO much better once I changed my diet too.  Of course I was extremely bad with the carbs due to food aversions prior to diagnosis, so I probably felt worse than I should have.

Anyhow if you have questions, concerns, sucesses or frustrations, this is the place to be!

  • I was just diagnosed last week - I was so upset.  I really beat myself up over it!  Now that I'm about a week in I'm doing a lot better with everything and getting used to making the right food choices!

I hope things start to go smoothly for you too!!

  • You will find this board is a lot of help.  I think GD is a little overwhelming at first but after a few weeks it becomes very routine when it comes to testing and thinking about carbs.  It takes a lot longer to figure out what your body can handel and what it can't.  Everyones GD is a little different and so is their guidlines.  Let us know what numbers you need to be at and what your carb allowence is like when you find out and we will compare with you and help you with meal planning and try to help with getting numbers down.  You are not alone!!!  =)
  • Welcome to our little support group.  :)  It's a club that no one really wants to join, but we're here.

It's really overwhelming when you first get diagnosed, but just do what the doctors tell you and everything will be fine.  And if you feel the need to scream or cuss about it, we're here for you.  :)
