Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Advice please: Pulling to stand then trouble getting back down!?

I'm not sure whether to ask this on 6-12 or 12-24, but hopefully you ladies can remember back ...

Did your LO go through a phase where they could pull to stand/cruise furniture, but then didn't know how to get back down? I don't remember DS1 ever hesitating about getting down, but DS2 FREAKS out. I mean screams all day, because he is constantly pulling up on things (baby gate, couch, easel, crib, etc) and then is afraid to plop back down on his own. What did you do? Did you somehow "teach" them how to do it?

TIA for any advice!

  • DS didn't know how to get back down at first.  If he wanted to sit, I'd just sit him down.  Eventually he figured it out.  I didn't really have to teach him how to do it.

Right, I know he'll figure it out eventually. I'm just hoping for some tips to help the process along. It has been about a week of constant screaming unless I am literally right there to get him back down every time he wants to crawl off and play after he stands up. :)

  • I would just "plop" him back down and try and make it a fun game...lots of clapping and cheering!  It made him giggle and encouraged him to do it on his own.  He figured it out after a week or so.

Good luck, that stage gets old in a hurry (esp. in the middle of the night).

Then I don't know what to tell you.  I didn't do anything specific to help DS figure it out.  I would just put him in a sitting position if he was indicating he wanted down.  Sorry.

  • yep, it took about a week of me showing him how to plop down on his butt over and over again before he got it on his own.  it was way worse at night in his crib.  good luck!

  • No, neither of mine has a problem getting back down.  They just let go and fell or reached an arm down.
