I was told (and read) that for BF babies, something like banana or sweet potato is more similar to the taste they're used to while FF babies are used to the blander flavors of plain cereals. We never gave her plain cereal but we do mix it into fruit every other day or so.
Rhett had rice cereal plain for two days and hated it. We moved on to sweet potatoes and he did great so we never gave him cereal again except to thicken foods that thawed runny like yellow squash and zucchini. The twins have never had plain cereal. I started them on pears.

ETA: I hit post by accident. I know some people say if they eat fruit first they won't want anything else because it's sweet, but that isn't the case with DD. She loves all food, so far.
Re: What was your DC's first solid food?
Banana.

We did fruit. Apples, bananas, and pears.

Thank you in my quest against my DH that rice cereal doesn't have to go first...or ever for that matter.
I think we will try bananas or sweet potatoes. We tried oatmeal and she hated it. H.A.T.E.D. it.
Thank you again!!!
Edit: And I do like that idea of mixing it with fruit. I'm going to remember that one when we really get into the feeding.

I should say that we ALWAYS mixed the cereal with something - formula, then applesauce, and then everything else.
Banana may have been fed to them on occasion before the applesauce....I didn't keep track as well this time around.
This is what we did too followed by banana.
