Experience w/ Azelex or products w/ azelaic acid (for acne/rosacea)?

Hi girls!

I went to the derm this morning and asked about something safe to use during pregnancy for acne and my hyperpigmentation from post BCP breakouts.  I don't want to use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid products.  Azelaic is a Pregnancy Category B prescription.  Anyone care to share their experiences?  TIA

  • I used Azelex for years and was thrilled to hear it's approved for pregnancy. I had great results with it. Wasn't pregnant at the time though.

  • Good to hear.  From what I've been reading, azelaic acid is found in wheat, barley, and rye.  I guess I'm just being overly cautious about using it.  I'd rather use something that is Category B than C though.

  • Oh I didn't know Azelex was category B. That's good to know. I've used Azelex before. Honestly my acne is so bad that a topical alone was never enough to clear it up. But I remember the Azelex being pleasant to use-not as drying as some products-so I wouldn't mind using it again. Beware though if I remember correctly it was pretty expensive. About $100 I think? Did your doc mention any other options that are category a or b? (I'm going to talk to my doc in Thursday).

  • I'm a pediatric dermatology PA (but we see adults as well)...Finacea is also a category B drug. If you have rosacea, they both work well. If it's more acne, I would use Clindamycin lotion/gel...that would work better and is safe as well.

Finacea and Azelex are both brands of Azelaic acid (I looked it up last night b/c I actually wanted the Finacea).  When I went to the derm yesterday she told me that benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin are Category C...not too keen on those.  I don't have rosacea but have read that girls w/ acne had success w/ the Finacea.  I used the Azelex last night w/ no problem...I guess I'm just being overly cautious.

Nothing in Category A for acne, the derm told me basically if I didn't want to use anything in Category C, Azelex was my best choice.  My main concern is the hyperpigmentation, I don't have active acne right now.

Yes, they are the same. Clindamycin is a Category B...tell your derm to look it up, LOL. We prescribe that and Erythromycin for acne in pregnancy all the time...I even used Clindagel while pregnant with DD.
