Well, the bump won't let me xp, so I'm re-typing a bit.
We had C's eval appt this morning and while I don't feel like he really cooperated (he said "no" a lot and didn't want to do the things she was asking of him), the therapist was able to get enough data to determine that for receptive language (right word?) he's at his age level but for expressive language he's at 1 year, 8 months (he is 2 years, 5 months). This was actually better than I expected.
We will go weekly now to try to help him along with his language development and see what happens. The therapist was very nice and seems like a good fit for us. ![]()
All in all, a good appointment. While I'd of course rather not deal with this at all, I am very happy to have resources available to help him out.
Oh yeah, I also asked about signing since we are still using baby signs with him (along with words, of course) and she said that while there is conflicting information about signing and speech development, she supports us using signs if they make overall communcation smoother and less frustrating for C and us.
Re: XP: C's speech eval
I'm glad it sounds like you are on the right path, even if its a path you would rather not be on. I often feel the same way.
My younger DS also has a significant speech delay and is receiving ST. His therapist also believes that sign is beneficial to communication. It teaches them, "I have to do X for mommy to do Y" - later you just change the X from performing a sign to saying a word. If you at least know what he wants it is also easier to push him to say the word and to recognize his attempts to do so.
When DS#1 was first evaluated for speech right before he turned two he literally had one word "ba" for everything. The first speech therapist we had taught him to sign open and more. Well, that just opened the flood gates for him. From there he literally made over 100 signs to communicate his needs. Early on into treatment these signs were a godsend because we had no idea what he would want. Fast forward a year and a half, DS is still speech delayed currenty at the level of a 2 year old (he has severe apraxia). He still uses signs but now can say some of the words with the signs.
The key is to say the word with the sign. Eventually try to get him to say part of the word (like the first letter if that's all he can do) while signing.
