2nd Trimester

If you "eat for two" will you get a big baby?

Is it true that if you treat the world as a buffet throughout your pregnancy you are prone to having a big baby?

  • My nonmedical opinion: your baby will be normal, but your thighs and butt will grow twice as fast. ;)

  • I don't think that is true. DH's stepsister gained over 60 lbs during her pregnancy. She is morbidly obese and her baby was born weighing 6 lbs 9 oz. Could be different for everyone but I think it is an OWT.
  • No. It means you'll get fat!

  • yeah, i think regardless of how much you eat, assuming  you eat enough for LO to develop, LO will develop and get as big as he or she wants to get.  Eating more makes YOU bigger.

I'm pretty sure eating for two will just give you (the general you not you specifically) a fat ass and thunder thighs - not a big baby.
  • one of my friends went to a Bradley class and she was told that a high protein diet will lead to a bigger baby. She followed the bradley diet which was high in protein and had an almost 9lb baby 3 weeks early but she only gained 35lbs and was petite to begin with herself.
  • I'm gonna say no, that's not gonna happen. I lost 10 lbs the first 16 weeks due to morning sickness, ate very healthy and never overate, and ended up with a baby girl who weighed 8 lbs 15 oz at birth.

    i agree with this.

  • Not following a healthy diet may however lead to GD, which can lead to a big baby and lots of other health problems.  And yes, mega thunder thighs.

  • There's not a lot of info out there.  Here are a few studies on the topic:
    1. Links both pre-pregnancy BMI and pregnancy weight gain with baby's birth weight: https://www.csuchico.edu/cjhp/3/4/144-156-baruffi.pdf
    2. Here's another that links pre-pregnancy hright & weight, as well as pregnancy weight gain, to baby's weight: https://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/00016349109006179?journalCode=obs.

  • I did my fare share of eating (I had a bad oreo craving) with my daughter and she was 9lbs. 3oz., I gained 35lbs. This time I am being much more cautious with what I eat, exercising 4-5 times a week, but I don't think I stand much of chance, I was 9lbs when I was born, my sister's son was 9lb. 13oz....we just have big babies.

This is interesting..i am glad you shared.

  • yes. in fact, if you eat enough, your baby will get so big, he'll actually split in half and you'll have twins.

    you should try for quads!

  • No - I ate for 10 my entire last pregnancy, gained almost 50 lbs, and she was 7 lbs 7 oz. I ended up with the fat ass and poochy stomach for the next year. So I'm trying to watch it this time around (I say as I just got back from Dairy Queen).

  • Haha I ate ice cream throughout my whole 3rd tri and my baby was 6.5lbs at 41 weeks and I gained 35 pounds
  • You are no more likely to get a big baby if you eat for two or not. The size of your baby is determined by many factors, but eating an exorbitant amount of calories isn't one of them.

I have gained 4 pounds and have been told I will probably have a big baby due to the fact that I was almost 10 lbs at birth and SO was almost 8 lb. My Doctor told me today that my weight gain is all baby, yet I am eating like a horse.

  • Like a PP mentioned, eating too much of the wrong things can lead to gestational diabetes which can lead to a big baby and cause other health problems with the baby.  So, in a way, there is some truth to it.  However, it is mostly determined by genetics.

  • I don't believe this is true. And, pregnant women are not really eating for two people; your caloric intake should only increase by 300 calories (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)
