Formula warm or cold?

DD has reflux. I didn't think to ask the dr today but do you think it matters if the formula is slightly warmed up? She is hardly able to take 1oz without screaming in pain, I'm wondering if giving cooler bottles would help or make it worse. Any thoughts?

Re: Formula warm or cold?

  • I don't know if it was because of the reflux or not, but DS took his bottles cold practically from moment one. He also had really bad reflux. If she's having such a bad time have they prescribed anything yet? Reflux is so painful to babies and the meds do help, as soon as they get the doseage right. Good Luck, I've been where you are now and it wasn't fun!

  • Yep we have 0.8ml of zantac 3x day as well as alimentum formula for milk protein allergy. Doc said she should feel better in about 2 days. I'm hoping it works quicker than that. She had her 3 doses today but so far she isn't any better.
  • My lo has really bad reflux and he takes his bottles at warm temperature. When he was first born, I would give them to him cold, but then I felt bad, so I started heating them up in the bottle warmer. Now I just keep a jug of spring water on the counter and use that.

  • For us it was just so much more convenient since he'd take them cold to give them cold. Also, with zantac, she will weight out of the meds occasionally. they'll only up  the doseage usually by .1 or .2 at a time which doesn't seem like much of an increase but  it makes a HUGE difference. We were going to the doc montly for weight checks for them to tell me yes, you're right he's weighted out of this dose, change it to this... It drove me a little  crazy! But I could always tell because he'd make really yucky faces w/ his burps, or have the really wet sounding ones. They usually treated me like I was nuts until they weighed him and did the math and realized I was right.

Also, w/ DS he seemed to get better after the first day or so of meds, but then seemed to regress  for a few days. It was exactly 7 days after starting when he was finally feeling completely better. That has mostly to do  with how raw their esophagus is and how much time it needs to heal. I fought one of the peds in our practice for 2 1/2 weeks before he'd diagnose DS... needless to say we no longer see him.
