  I haven't said "I need a babysitter this day this day and this day" etc. But I have said "if anybody knows a great sitter could I get their contact info?" 

  I have a lot of close family and friends on fb so I would trust their recs for a sitter kwim?

  Guilty.  I have a group of friends who all do this and we try to help each other out as much as possible.  I don't see anything wrong with asking for help.

  Yes you are. My FB is comprised of only my family and freinds, and I trust  my friends /family more than a sittercity listing and I recently (last week) posted my need for a sitter for a 2 day work event I'm doing. (I SAH and this event is a one shot consulting deal I landed, during the day so it's not a long term gig.) I posted that I wanted recs for responsible late high school to college aged girls who would be willing to make a $100 bucks per day  for 2 days in June. I don't see a problem with that. They're personal recommendations from people I know, not a random CL listing.

  I haven't yet, but will. I have several former students who are Red Cross certified baby-sitters, and during the summer I will ask them to baby-sit a few times.
