DS is done with the helmet [edited]

At his last appointment on 4/14, Aaron's clinician at Cranial Technologies said the adjustment may have been the last but there was a possibility for one more on 4/28.  But he's been getting red marks on his forehead and the skin started bulging around it due to the pressure, so I can only assume he's outgrown his 2nd DOC Band.

I'm calling Cranial Technologies when they open in a few minutes to see how to proceed. But I took off his helmet yesterday afternoon and I don't think it will be going back on.

This is 8 weeks into his 2nd one (though that first week, he didn't wear it consistently due to fit issues) and his head looks really good. Not "perfect" but nobody who isn't well versed in brachycephaly would ever know his head was once so flat it was concave in a spot.

I'm pretty excited yet nervous. But I love being able to snuggle up to his fuzzy head (not much hair yet) again.

After his "graduation" and exit photos, I'll share here and around the Bump. I hope my experience with helmet therapy can help others. It's a big part of why I've blogged about it and have been so open.

UPDATE / 8:50 AM: I called and spoke to Aaron's clinician.  We're done. Exit appointment is on Friday morning. Eek! Yay! Eek!

  • Thanks, guys!

I'm looking forward to seeing the exit photos and to get his numbers (I need them).  But I'm glad he sleeps on his sides and tummy, too, so my worries of regression are slight.

  • That is fantastic news!  I am glad to hear the helmets have worked so well for Aaron, and can't wait to see the photos.  I remember the huge difference visible in the batch you posted after the first helmet - it was really remarkable.

He's currently blonde... my DH was blonde until he was a teenager and I was blonde until I was 4.  His eyes look to be a greenish gray right now.

And, pahokie, I'm also looking to see the difference for his final pics. I hope there is a noticeable difference between 6 weeks in and 16 weeks so I can "know" I made the right choice to continue after he outgrew the first band.

  • Sweet!!!

Feels like he just finished getting fit for the second helmet? I'm sure my sense of time is all out-of-whack....

  • Monica,  yeah it does.  But he got the 2nd helmet on March 1st, which was 8 weeks ago. I guess he technically only wore this one 7.5 weeks due to the days it was off due to fit issues but time also does fly.

  • Wow - time flies!  Seems like yesterday you were talking about whether or not you were going to do it - and now he's done!  Just a blip on the radar!  I'm so glad this turned out to be such a positive experience....but I have to admit that part of me is going to miss that cute smiley little face with the helmet on - he could be a poster boy or model for the company that makes those bands!

Congrats to Aaron I know it was such a stressful decision to get the helmet in the first place and then to get the second. You are such a great mom and Aaron is so lucky.
