When did LO go to one nap?

My LO is waking up at night again (has been for the past month) and then is waking anywhere from an hour and a half to an hour early. I am wondering if he needs to be on just one nap to help with early waking and waking during the night, or if this is just a phase.

  • DS went to one nap right at 12 months.

  • caymanbride--did you wait for his cues to  do it? What time does he get up in the AM and what time is his nap and the length? My DS can only make it about 4 hours before he needs to sleep.

  • DS dropped down to one nap about 4 weeks ago (16.5 months old).  He started taking one super long nap and then refusing the other nap.  Sometimes he would nap for 2 hrs in the morning and then refuse the afternoon nap.  And sometime he would refuse the morning nap and have a long afternoon nap.  After 3 or 4 days of this (and the coinciding crappy night sleep), I decided on forcing the one and only nap.  I would do my best to keep DS up in the morning until right after lunch.  At about 12 noon I'd put him down for his nap, and it only took a day or two for him to get the hang of it.  Since then his nap has stretched out to at least 2 hrs, sometimes 3, and he falls asleep without making a peep.

  • GirlieG--Was the crappy sleep due to two naps? My DS has been an amazing sleeper sleeping from 8 am-8pm with two naps...The last month has been early wakings in the morning and waking during the night...

DS still gets a little sleepy at his old nap time (9am), but that's when I change him out of his pjs, and we head out to do errands or go for a walk or go to the park.  I was afraid of making him overtired, but he did fine.

DS's normal wake up time is around 6am, but he plays in his crib for at least an hour before we get him.  We usually don't go in to get him until 7:15am.  His bedtime is on the earlier side.  We generally start his bath at 6:30pm.  After pjs and a little snuggling, he's usually asleep in his crib by 7:20pm.  He doesn't STTN - he's usually up for an hour or so around midnight, but he doesn't make too much of a scene.

I should say that before he went down to one nap, he was up for at least 2 hours during the night.  Once he went down to one nap, the night waking got significantly better.  DS has only STTN 5 or 6 times EVER, so` I j

  • sorry about that...    DS has only STTN 5 or 6 times EVER, and I don't think he ever will - he's just that kind of sleeper.
  • Ahhh... one of the reasons I love DD's daycare.  DD had started to take less reliable afternoon naps and this coincided with her looking on enviously as the "big" kids in the baby room ate their lunch.  They basically let us know that she was ready for the "big kid" lunch and in doing so, this would switch her nap schedule to one nap/day after lunch.  The transition has been great for her ~ today I spied on her and she slept from noon to 2:30.  She usually gets about 2 hours during the day and 11 at night (and lately she STTN unless she has an ear infection or something causing her distress).
  • DD went to one nap, on a regular basis, at about 14-months or so.  Around 12-months, she was still taking 2 at home but only one at daycare (3 days/week).
