AW: Signing

Kate signed "more" and "water" today!  I am so excited!  The only other signs that we are working on are "milk" and "all done."  If you sign with your child, what are the most useful signs?

Re: AW: Signing

  • "open" was a big one for Jack (in addition to the others you listed)

    umm...let's see...

    -outside

    - help

    - please and thank you (only b/c I'm obsessed w/ him being polite). one thing about "please" though. He would sign, "More, please." when he was eating and he would often have messy hands. I still remember him rubbing spaghetti sauce all over his shirt b/c he wanted more meatballs. So, yeah, you might want to learn from my mistakes.

  • Yay!  That's great!  I'm so envious - we had every intention of signing with C, but we haven't kept up with it :-(

  • Yes

We taught Griff "all gone", "thank you", and "banana" (that one was important because it's his favorite fruit) in addition to the ones you've already mentioned.

    :-)

  • the only other one in addition to the ones you've mentioned about that dd knows is "eat" and that's been really usefull for her to tell us when she's hungry - which is all the time.

on a funny side note, her daycare teachers tell us when she wakes up from her nap she immediately sits up, signs "all done" and then "eat".

  • Exciting!  Go Kate!  We also did "thank you."  Can't remember any others that were that useful...

  • Go Kate!! We're still working on "more" and "all done."
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • That's awesome!!

This is something I hadn't given much thought to recently, but seems like something I would be interested in trying.  Is there a certain book or website you found most helpful??

I just googled a few signs.  This website is what I ended up using, but it's just a dictionary.  There are a ton of books and stuff, but we found it easiest to focus on only 3 signs.  I wasn't even super consistent about it.

  • Ya for Kate!!!  I want to teach him...but haven't gotten around to it yet.  Maybe once school is over and we can be consistent with it.
