Side rails or no side rails

My DS is outgrown his crib and we are switching to a full bed in the next week. DId you or did you not use side rails when changing to a big boy bed?

Re: Side rails or no side rails

  • I am curious what you mean by "outgrown his crib"?

  • Our crib converts to a toddler bed, so he still has one "side" on his toddler bed.  But we did not put up a rail on the open side and he has done just fine.  He has since slept in a full size bed when we were traveling and did ok with that too.

  • We haven't made the transition yet, but as we're using a proper twin bed (so a couple of feet off the floor), we will use them.

  • We just switched DD to a twin bed a few weeks ago. We are using side rails, because in the crib she always wanted to be in the corner. She still seeks out the 'corner' at the head of the bed and we didn't want to risk her falling out. Her bed is pretty high.

  • Both of my kids went to twin beds straight from the crib and I did use bed rails for both.  I can't see a drawback to using bedrails.

  • DD sleeps in a twin bed with a bedrail. I've gone in to find her all over the bed, so I just feel more comfortable using one.

  • We did not use them, but we did put the bed so that one side is against a wall.  That is the side he sleeps on.
  • When he was in his crib converted to a toddler bed we had a rail because there just wasn't a lot of space for him to move around and I figured he'd fall out.  Once we moved him to a real bed we did away with the rail and he did just fine, he's never fallen out.
  • The bedrails we needed were out of stock the day we moved DD to her bed, so we just pushed her toybox back against her bed. It's a handy bedrail (which she needs since she rolls all over the place) and side table.

  • We didn't use them, DD doesn't move at all in her sleep.

BUT, we did use this at my mom's house:  great product, cheap and easy to use and works great (unless you child is a REALLY active sleeper!)

  • We converted DD's crib to a toddler bed and didn't use side rails.  She's now in a twin bed that's much higher off the ground and fortunately she's never fallen out of it.

  • DS is in a double bed (converted crib) not against the walls and we don't use rails. I put an extra pillow on either side of him so he has some "boundaries." The bed is really high, but we've never had any problems.
