OMG clothes organization is so overwhelming

I packed away all of DD1's clothes as she outgrew them knowing we'd have another.  And score, we had another girl!

BUT, I wound up packing up clothes that she never wore (hand-me-downs that were either not my taste or never fit right) instead of giving them away right then.  We're talking multiple totes full.  I've gone through and picked out stuff for DD2 as she's grown into it, but haven't truly gone through them.

I just finished going through about four totes of clothes and I'm MAYBE halfway done.  I am sorting them into:

1. Clothes to send to our new niece

2. Clothes that DD1 has outgrown but need to keep for her little sister

3. Clothes that have sentimental value and I can't possibly donate or even send to SIL for the new niece (I've got a bit of a hoarding gene--but it is only one medium tote and it is all contained)

4. Clothes to donate (I currently have four medium sized totes of giveaway clothes--and I'm only through 24 month size...I got a LOT of hand-me-downs from my cousin who has two girls)

Anyone have tips on how to stay on top of all of it?  I'm hoping once I get a handle on all of the current stuff that it'll be easier to do things here and there.  A blessing and a curse to have two girls, I guess.

And I won't lie, in the back of my head, I'm scared that we'll have a oops (we're done at two kids) and I will have given everything away.  I'm feeling a little nuts today.

Re: OMG clothes organization is so overwhelming

  • I hear ya!  I think I go thru clothes every 2-3 weeks for the twins right now, and nearly everytime a load of laundry is done, I pull out a couple things that are too small for someone.  I have seriously 4 totes of stuff that is too small for someone (babies that need to be donated, or older kids that need to go to the basement for babies) sitting in my hallway, and a few piles of stuff in the babies' room.  I WILL tackle the babies' room and our room (need to clear our lots of ours) sometime this week.  I HAVE to I'm slowly working myself into the nut house with all the clothes in this house.

My one tip - that I forgot and and to come back and edit in - is to keep a couple bins in the baby's room closet, so that when baby has outgrown it, you immediately sort it.  Then when the bin is full you can get rid of it (either to niece or donate).

  • I go through clothes every season.  The stuff that doesn't fit and I don't keep for another baby (which we probably won't have, but not 100% sure) immediately goes to goodwill.

  • I completely understand.  All I have to do is switch out their seasons and it's still overwhelming.  Like, for instance, today is cold and they're in pants and long-sleeves, so I'm not quite ready for those to go away, but there are also summer clothes out too.  Plus, DS will probably fit in some of his winter clothes again in the fall, so there's that to think about.

I have gotten rid of all their smaller stuff though - that's a nice feeling.

  • I get rid of things as I go.  Once it's outgrown it goes strait into a donate box (I have one of each so it's rare that something gets saved for DS, the few neutral things I'll save but there's not much).   Any hand-me-downs that you get and don't like get rid of right away.
  • When someone gives you clothes go through it right away. Stuff you'll keep for dds and things you won't. Get rid of the "things you won't" right away.  Keep a tub in dd1's closet for things that she out grows.  keep a tub in dd2 room for things for your neice.  keep a tub in your room for donate stuff and keep your tub of stuff to keep whereever.

Good luck, it does get overwhelming!

  • I'm right there with you. Right now, I have a box in DS's room of things that he's outgrown, 2 boxes in DD's room of things that she's outgrown, and bags in both of their closets that have clothes that they will grow into (we get a ton of hand-me-down's).

I don't have any advice. I am awful at it myself.

  • In DD's closet I have three bins - one for donation, one for storage, one for a friend's baby. As she outgrows clothes, they go into the bins. Then, on a rainy day, I just refold everything and put it into the storage bins, donate or give to my friend.

  • I knew I could count on you ladies for helpful suggestions!  I love the idea of bins in their closets--until I went through it, there were just piles on the floor, in old diaper boxes and a laundry basket.  The three bins in DD2's closet is about the BEST idea.  That way I can sort as I go and it isn't so overwhelming when the "rainy day" comes along to go through them.

The worst part about this "project" that I finally started is that I really hadn't done much of any sorting except into sizes.  I'm ready to purge stuff because I'm now to the point where I know we're done with kids!
