Toe Walking

So, DS started this new kind of toe walking maybe a month ago. Anyone experienced this or have a solution? It looks so painful.

Imagine you're up on your toes walking around, but you fold your toes UNDER and walk like that. He doesn't do it ALL day, but most days he does it at some point. He gets upset if we point it out and tell him to stop, but putting his laceup shoes on does eliminate it w/o tantruming. Is that enough? I wish he could/would tell me WHY he's doing it. It's got to be unhealthy for his feet/posture/etc..

Re: Toe Walking

  • It sounds like he's just playing around. Just keep an eye on it. I've had some toe walkers in my school, but that's all they do and they took longer to learn to crawl, walk, ect.

  • Our staff Physical Therapist gave us some massages to do with our toe-walkers. They get their calves and acchilles tendons massaged twice a day. Also, we do some "feet squeezing" bu applying gentle pressure to the center of the sole of the foot. They love it.

  • DS toe walks and toe runs. OT recommended bouncing him (standing) on the exercise call so that the bottoms of his feet get plenty of pressure/contact.

  • Yeah, i think he does like extra input in his feet b/c he used to march heavyfooted a lot. Probably just a temporary replacement. Thanks for the suggestions!
