Front Facing Car-Seat Rec's

Hello Ladies,

I'm moving over to this board. Will turned 1 yesterday and his party was a huge success. He has outgrown his infant rear facing car seat and the only other one we have is for when he's 30 pounds or 3 years old. Can anyone suggest an 'in between' front facing car seat until he gets to that size? TIA!

Re: Front Facing Car-Seat Rec's

  • We have the Evenflo triumph advance.    Love it!   The straps thing is my favorite feature, no rethreading!!

  • We have a Britax Marathon that we like.
  • We have the Graco My Ride 65 for DS#2, who is 18 mos & he's RFing in that still.  He can RF in that up to 40lbs (he is 28lbs, 31" now).  FFing it goes up to 65lbs with the 5-pt harness.  VERY good seat.  I plan on RFing him in that until he hits the weight or height limit.  After that it will be the Nautilus, which DD#2, who is 4 1/2, is in now.

Yes, it's a booster as well as you can put the 'back' on it. Does that make sense? It looks like it's for an older child though.

I'm hearing lots of good things about the Marathon. THanks so much ladies!

  • Sound like you might like a convertible seat- it "converts" from RF to FF. Keep in mind that 1 year (AND 20 lbs) is the absolute minimum for turning a baby FF, and ideally you shouldnt do it until age 2 because it's not nearly as safe. There are lots of convertible seats that allow kids to stay RF until around age 2 and then FF in the 5 point harness until about age 5. I'd recommend the First Years TrueFit or Graco MyRide for most kids. Both are under $200 and will last you another several years until your LO is ready for a booster (most kids aren't ready until around age 5).
  • We have two: Graco ComfortSport and Graco MyRide 65. The Graco MyRide65 is by far my fav.

Yep, I figured that was what you were talking about. I would just find a good convertible that you like and stick with that. It is safest to keep your little one in a harnessed seat. I am sure DD will be in a harnessed seat until age 5. Plus, she is a peanut.

  • We have two Britax Boulevard's and love them!  I spent a lot of time reading safety reviews before making my decision, and we got a great deal from www.albeebaby.com.

  • I have a roundabout 50.  I'm also planning on getting a radian soon.

FWIW - it is recommended you keep your child rear facing until at least 2 years.

  • DS is in the Graco Comfortsport and is still RFing. DD used it and when I moved her into the Nautilus she still hadn't hit the height/weight limit on the Comfortsport at 4yrs.

When you're ready to FF I suggest keeping LO harnessed as long as possible. I believe the Nautilus is 65lbs harnessed then you can remove the straps and use it as a high back booster or backless booster.

  • Happy Birthday to your LO! We have two Graco MyRide 65s and love them! It's a comfy seat and a great price. We were able to buy two for what we would have had to plunk down on one Marathon and we needed two good seats.

DS is almost 20 months and around 23.5 pounds. He is on the smaller side. We plan to keep him RF until age 2, or longer if he hasn't put on a whole lot more weight at that point. The MyRide RF until 40 pounds and can forward face to 65, as long as your child doesn't reach the height restrictions for either direction first. Once DS outgrows this seat or we decide to turn him FF, we will probably buy a Graco Nautilus.

RF or FF though, keeping your child in a 5-point harness is the way to go. Good luck with your decision!

  • We also have a Graco MyRide 65 and I love it.  I have a review on my blog (link in siggy).  DS is rear-facing and will be until he outgrows the height/weight limits (probably not until he's 3-ish).  And yes, please remember to use the 5-point harness until absolutely necessary.  the MyRide 65 goes up to 65 lbs, so for most children it will last a very long time.

  • Hands down I recommend that Graco Nautilus! This car seat will last with him until he's old enough to NOT use even a booster seat.

It has built in harness up to 100lbs. That's my most favorite feature.

Both of my boys use them.

I agree, this is one of the best FF only seats out there. However, the harness can only be used to 65 lbs, not 100. It can be used as a booster until 100 lbs, but must use only a vehicle seat belt from 65-100 lbs.

  • Thank you so much ladies!
