3rd Trimester

What does baby wear in the hospital?

Forgive me if this is a dumb question.  I have been on bedrest at home since Jan. and wasn't able to sign up for any of the hospital classes....where I probably would have found this out.

Do I need to bring a bunch of onesies to the hospital for LO?  I'm not sure what to expect- will the nurse ask us for pajamas/outfits for him as soon as he's born?  How many should I bring?

Any other tips/advice that were covered in your hospital class that you wouldn't normally know as a 1st time Mom??  Please share them with me!  Thanks!

  • The hospital has everything for baby.  All you need is a going home outfit and a carseat!

  • At our L&D tour last week, they said they have onesies, stocking hat, diapers, etc. for LO. The only thing we need to provide is an outfit to come home in and a carseat.
  • The hospital should have everything LO will need while he/she is there. You just need a going home outfit. I think they usually just wear a diaper and a receiving blanket while they are there, but it may vary from hospital to hospital.

  • The hospital has everything baby needs, though we're bringing our own sleepers/clothes with us.
  • Our hospital provides long-sleeve newborn shirts, hats, diapers and blankets - that's a pretty standard wardrobe those first couple of days!  Obviously if you want your LO to wear something specific, you should bring it...  The shirts are easier in the beginning b/c of the frequent diaper changes and umbilical cord care (instead of onesies).  You'll probably keep the baby wrapped in a blanket so really no need for pants or anything.  Also, if you're nursing, you may have to get the baby fairly naked to wake up and eat (they're pretty sleepy in the beginning) so simply unwrapping a blanket is easy.  HTH.

  • Our hospital has the little side snap t-shirts.  They provide diapers (take them home with you!) little hats, and the receiving blanket.

You'll want to bring something for the hospital picture probably and then to take baby home in.(can be same outfit)

  • All we needed was an outfit to bring DD home.  They provided clothes, blankets, diapers, wipes, everything needed until we left.  We were even told to clear out the leftover supplies and given an extra pack of diapers!
  • It really depends on your hospital. I was surprised to learn that we have to bring our own diapers and wipes. If we dont bring wipes they give us face cloths to use. Our hospital provides a t-shirt and swaddles them in a blanket, but since we have to bring everything else anyway, we're bringing our own sleepers and onesies. Also a coming home outfit and of course car seat.

  • baby will wear a diaper, side snap or tie shirt, hat, socks, and a receiving blanket while in the hospital. All provided by the hospital. Some have rules about what the take home outfit should have (hats, foot covering, outfit that goes between baby's legs for the car seatbelt etc) but that may also be weather related.
