Preemies

Can premmie births be heriditory?

I apologize for my ignorance or silly question....i was 6 weeks premmie and am wondering if my baby is at a risk for being a premmie then?

Re: Can premmie births be heriditory?

  • It can be hereditary but isn't necessarily. Do you know why you were born early? Conditions like pre-eclampsia tend to be hereditary, but other causes of prematurity, like infection, aren't hereditary.

FWIW, my grandmother was a preemie, though we don't know why. My mom was not. I was born at 42 weeks. But my children were born at 30 weeks due to complications of their twin pregnancy that had nothing to do with heredity.

  • I think it can be, but in your case it depends on why you were early.

  • hmm...thats a prob, have not had contact with mum in many years...might call my grandma see if she knows...
  • DD and I were both 5 weeks early.

DD was born due to pre-e and with my mom they just think the dates were off...who knows?

  • It can be - it depends on why you were born early.

There is absolutely no history of preemies in our huge family - and Andrew was delivered at 26 weeks. I have absolutely none of the risk factors!  Go figure!

  • I think it depends on the conditions of the birth. There are new studies that show there could be a genetic factor to women who get pre-e/HELLP. Not sure about prom, though.
