Babies: 3 - 6 Months

any moms of 5 month olds delaying cereal - solids?

my mom wants to try to feed him cereal but I keep hearing that it's better to wait to introduce cereal or solids...

thoughts?

thanks

It all depends on your/your pedi's opinion. I was advised to hold off on "foods" until 6 months because I have severe food allergies. My pedi was not worried about oatmeal/rice cereal having any affects on her. So I started rice cereal this past week once a day and will move on to oatmeal in 2 weeks. Then I will start the other "foods" at 6 months.

  • Sweetie, you do what in your heart feels right. There is a huge debate whether to wait or not. Where both sides have valid points it is an individual choice. My little girl started solids at 4 months due to reflux.  If you and your pedi are comfortable waiting until 6 months ( I would not wait any later than that because that too can cause issues with food sensitivity) then I would wait!! If you think your baby is just not satisfied on milk and you need a little something more then give it a try!

Do what your gut tells you.

  • I just started Summer on rice cereal a couple of days ago.  She was showing signs of wanting my food.  She seems to really enjoy it.  We also have no allergies so I feel comfortable with this.  I plan on making her food so I will probably try sweet potato in a couple of weeks:)

Do what makes you feel comfortable.

  • We're waiting till 6 months or when she has an interest in adult food (totally indifferent still).

  • DS is only 3 and a half months but I'm in the same boat as you! My MIL insists I start cereal bc DS is so big and always hungry. She started DH on cereal at 2 and a half months ("and he turned out just fine!!" Lol). But, we're going to try and wait the whole 6 months on BM alone before trying anything else. From what I understand, cereal really has no nutritional value (certainly nothing even close to BM)- its just meant as an intro to solid foods. So...we are going to stick to the plan of making it a whole 6 months EBF. :)

Agreed and well said Mandee! We haven't started yet but we go to the pedi on Monday and I'm going to discuss it with him and then DH and I will make our decision.

  • I agree with everyone else to do what you think feels right.

With that said, I wanted to wait until 6 months and my pedi wants me to start a week or so before his 6 month appt so that we can talk about how its going.  I'm happy with that because there might be some questions that I come up with that I wouldn't necessarily call to ask but since I'm there I might ask.

I'm so excited to start solids even though I cry at every milestone.  I've been researching like crazy what to make him first (after the rice/oatmeal)

  • I tried to give my DS cereal at 4 months and his tummy wasn't ready for it. We tried again last week and he loves it.  He was showing a lot of interest in adult food and he eats so much (>40 oz a day).  I started him on apples on Friday at 5 months old and he loves it.

You know your baby better than anyone else.  Do not let any one talk you into doing what you and your DC aren't ready for.  My FIL wanted to give my DS a "taste" of adult food and then looked at me like I had two heads when I said no and got upset.  It's YOUR baby, not their's.

  • We're waiting until 6 months or later. I want to wait to see that she has an interest in food but also the Pedi said we should wait until her skin issue is figured out. So until we get her eczema under control she will just get bottles of wonderful hypoallergenic formula. =(
