Clicky Poll: Gerber Onesies

I've heard it said repeatedly on here that the Gerber onesies (and the sleep n plays too, I assume) are not very true to size and they shrink badly, plus they aren't very durable. At my shower today I received 5 packages of Gerber onesies and one package of sleep n plays. I'm thinking of returning them to get some that are better, but I can't decide if I should return them all or just the smaller sizes. 3 of the 6 are newborn size and if they shrink, my baby (already predicted to be 4lbs at 30 weeks) will never be able to wear them. 2 are 0-3 mo and one is 6-9 mo.

So which sizes do you think I should return?

Re: Clicky Poll: Gerber Onesies

  • I don't have any NB sized onesies, just 0-3 months.  I'd say take the NBs back and get some more 0-3s.

I've also heard that they run small.  I went ahead and returned/exchanged for more 6-9month and 12-18month sizes.

  • Gerber onesies run small and will shrink.  I'd get rid of the NB ones and possibly the 0-3.

  • DD was a preemie and around 5 lbs she was wearing the 0-3 size. I liked Gerber becasue it was actually a brand that fit. She is about 7 lbs now and still wearing the 0-3 well but they do seem small.
  • All of them and buy Carters.  They are much higher quality and don't stretch out and shrink like Gerber.

Also, my DS was 8lb 9oz when he was born and he was in newborn clothes for almost the first month.  He was swimming in them when he was born.

  • I have returned all of the Gerber ones I have recieved, and gotten the Ciro brand onese instead.  i have heard the quality is better and that they don't shrink,

  • I'd return them all...I started out DD in them and it seemed like I was constantly buying more in another size because they were too small too fast. I love jammies at Children's Place--durable, long lasting, and true to their size...target carries great onesizes too (not sure of the brand name).

I have a mix and having already washed them up, the Ciro ones are a thicker, nicer quality than the Gerbers.

  • I got some Gerber side snap Tees at my shower and I think they were 3 month and after I washed them they seriosuly could be preemie clothes. My LO already feels like he is over 6lbs (according to midwife) so i doubt they will fit at all when he is born.

Return them ALL...Gerber clothes are not good quality...My favorite onesies were the Old Navy brand, but I agree that carters and circo are nice as well...Old Navy was my favorite though
  • Return all of them and get some better ones. You will likely not end up using them if you keep them.

I got some hand me down Gerber onesies that are NB and 0-3 sizes. They are so ridiculously small compared to the other onesies they have. They look like they are preemie sized and the quality is really crummy. I won't be using them.

Despite what appears to be the popular opinion, I actually like Gerber onesies. DD never just wore them as a shirt (so if thats your plan for them, I say return them all and get Carters), but I like them for under her pajamas. They are thin, soft and tight fitting and work perfectly under a sleeper. DD still wears them (now 10 mo old) under her sleepers every night. Sure, they run small, but you just buy a bigger size and its no big deal. Anyways, I would keep one pack of newborn and get a couple bigger ones. DD was born at 7 lb 12 oz and wore the newborn size for the first couple weeks.

  • Ugh! Gerber onesies are so cheap its ridiculous. The snaps tear out, they are thin as paper, not surable and stretch out. Take them all back and get Carters

  • I say return them all and purchase the Carters white onesies.
  • I was just packing away baby clothes the other day in prep for our house move. Just for kicks I compared a Gerber 3-6mo with a Carters NB onsie. The Gerber was every so slightly wider and longer than the Carters...like maybe a 1/4". So if that gives you any idea... and quality/thickness of the cotton, Carters wins hands down.

  • Keep them all until your baby is born - and then return them.

  • I did like the side-snap onesies and t's that Gerber makes.  During the first few weeks/month when you have them swaddled most of the time the thin snug fitting layer is nice.  I wish more brands made the side-snap/kimono style b/c it's so much easier to put on them when their heads are still floppy.

For wearing out and about, I agree to use Carter, Gap, ON, etc. but for layering under sleepwear or other shirts the Gerber ones are great.

  • Yes, they totally run waaaaay smaller than they say.  I don't really mind them, but yes - I just remember having to go up a size or two with them with DS#1.

  • Popping over from 0-3. My lo was 6lbs 10oz when he was born and fit into the Newborn Gerber Onsies and Sleepers. He did drop down to 6 lbs after he was born though. He grew out of them when he hit about 8lbs. He is now 10lbs 10oz and wears 3-6 in Gerber. I would suggest maybe keeping a pack of the Newborn size and if lo doesn't fit in them then you can always return them for a different size. Ultrasounds can be wrong when predicting weight. They thought my lo was going to be big and he ended up being a little peanut.

I agree with this.  You don't need a ton of gerber onesies  and sleepers, but they have their purpose.  I actually think I will use the sleepers a lot this summer since they are lightweight.

Took the words right out of my mouth--they are great at "underwear" for babies, and my daughter was the same size at this posters and she wore them under clothing/pajamas exactly as this posters baby did.

Also, if you are planning to breastfeed, I don't care how good you think your diapers are, breastmilk poop works it's way out of the diapers often, and I'd rather stain a gerber onesie that no one will see than an expensive one.  Just sayin.

  • If you can, return them and get Carters. As a mom of soon to be 3 boys, and huge onesie wearers, they stink! They arent soft, wash crappy, snaps rip holes in the crotch, and run small. I would spend the extra money and get carters. The circo brand from target are ok. They are soft, but the neck gets stretched out on them easily. Hope this helps!

this is what I was going to say.  I have tons of carters ones and the fabric has  alot of stretch to it and will retain it's shape, but will not "stretch out or shrink after washing".  You can buy them in bigger sizes than needed for LO because it will fit fine,  then stretch as needed.

  • My LO, who wore NB clothes for 4 months, could only wear the 3-6 gerber onesies and 0-3 sleepers. HTH :)
  • Wish I had read this before putting 15 onesies in the wash!

  • Take back all of the onesies and get Carter's white onesies instead.

But I happened to LOVE the Gerber Sleep 'n Plays. They do run a bit small, but not nearly as small as the onesies. It's so hard to find sleepers with zippers (because believe me, you will CURSE snaps in the middle of the night!), and these were some of the few that I could find for the longest time. DS just grew out of his 3-6 month Gerber sleepers a few weeks ago, and he's 16 lbs and wearing 6 month clothing (and almost into his 9 month clothes!).

I now use Children's Place zippered sleepers, but in the beginning when he was growing so quickly, the Gerber sleepers were perfect.

  • Ugh this is so upsetting. I have about 10 NB, 15 0-3 mos, and 20 3-6 mos Gerber onesies already washed and put away for my twins.

I really wish I had heard about this before! Nobody ever mentioned Gerber onesies being crappy :(
